It's racing season, y'all, and I don't mean asphalt -- I mean dirt! If you're anything like me, at least one night out of your weekend consists of a dirt track race. It's a redneck's haven. I am an avid race attender, and these are some of the things I have noticed every time I go.
1. You have a favorite driver.
It's probably someone you know personally, or someone who wins a lot.
2. The politics.
Because you have a favorite driver, you also have a driver you hate, and their fans probably don't like you either.
3. The people-watching.
It doesn't matter who you are, there are always some characters at the dirt track.
4. The fights.
It could be in the middle of a race, before the race starts or after it ends. They are also probably for no reason.
5. The dirt.
It's everywhere. You'll leave covered in it. My advice is to not wear white, and you should probably take a shower before getting in bed.
6. The food.
It's probably the best concession stand food you will ever eat.
7. Prayer and the national anthem.
It's one of the few places that still has a prayer with personalized prayer requests and the national anthem played before the drop of the first green flag.
8. Trackside.
These are the people who get there as soon as the gate opens and they are right beside the track. They are probably grilling and listening to some form of country music. They are also the ones who leave with entire chunks of dirt on them, not just an even dusting.9. The pits.
Where all of the drivers and their friends/family/possy hang out and watch the race.10. The drama.
Some people just take racing way too seriously. It's just for fun and entertainment, people!
11. The stories from the past.
You hear stories of previous drivers, current drivers and even spectators. These people have a reputation around the track, and you better respect that.
12. Late model class.
The big guys. They're the fastest cars to hit the track. They're also, typically, the last to hit the track. This means the dust is going to be something serious.13. Stock 4-cylinder class.
The class with a minimum of 15 cars on the track every week. Typically, your beginner class with a lot of wrecks.14. The wrecks.
Usually harmless ones, but every so often you have someone bump someone wrong or they lose control of their car and you see some interesting things happen on the track.
15. The Facebook groups.
You are probably a member of all of them, and you're probably up to date on all of the drama at your "home track," even if you missed the race.Overall, you're probably a dedicated fan, driver or family member. I've grown up there and have spent countless Saturday's watching races. It gets in your blood and stays forever, especially at the dirt track.
