15 Signs You Are A Camp Counselor
Brinkley Mebane

As school begins to come to a close, we all start looking for ways to spend our summer. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you end up getting to spend your summer at camp! Camp is the place where lifelong bonds are made, friendship bracelets are given, and camp fires are enjoyed. You could say camp is pretty inTENTS.

1. You own at least three shirts featuring wolves howling at the moon. Brought to you by the Walmart nearest you, of course.

2. Letters are bae.

3. You can whip together a friendship bracelet before your non-camp friends have finished cutting their string.

4. Tie-dying is second nature. In fact, you do it weekly with 15 6-year-olds (bless you).

5. Bug spray is your perfume.

6. You know more verses to boom-chick-a-boom than anyone should ever know.

7. Your Chaco tan is a badge of glory. You worked hard for it, so why not show it off?!

8. You have a love/hate relationship with the dining hall.

9. Every story you tell your friends back home starts with “one time at camp.”

10. You catch yourself using camp lingo after coming home and then spend ten minutes trying to explain what it means.

11. You spend the rest of your year reminiscing about camp.

12. Nap time is your best friend.

13. Cabin chores are a neverending struggle.

14. “Is it time for lunch yet?” is the most common question you’ll hear.

15. You love your job and you couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

While being on call for your campers 24/7 is no easy gig, it is so worth it. By giving our time to others, we receive so much in return. The bond you share with your co-counselors is unspoken but runs deep. Not to mention there’s a strong chance you’re going to get some sick tan lines out of this adventure.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

    Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
