The American way of life has been a very fast-paced one, and in today’s generation, it can be especially hard for an Indian-American girl to establish her own identity. Being raised by parents who have followed a more or less traditional route isn’t easy. It can be hard for parents to give their kids the freedom that comes from living in a liberal country like the US, and it can be hard for girls to understand and accept where their parents are coming from.Whatever the background may be, everyone has some similar experiences. An Indian-American girl might be referred to as an ABCD (American Born Confused Desi) who struggles constantly to keep a balance between her roots as well as blend in with the American lifestyle. Here are a couple of things you can probably relate to if you are a typical Indian-American girl.

1. Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan are your all time favorite couple

move over Ajay Devgan. Raj and Simran belong together #couplegoals

2. Your bathroom drawer is filled with tubes of Fair and Lovely

The Indian's girl’s version of Olay products

3. You get excited when you are invited to an Indian Wedding

just another opportunity for you to show off your lehengas and Bollywood dancing skills

4. You probably want to be in the medical field when you grow up

Which Indian girl doesn't dream of being a doctor?!!

5. You were guilty of wearing Indian clothes to picture day for the first five years of school

Showcasing that Indian side of you to the whole world

6. Garba and Holi are your two favorite times of the year

There's nothing like you dancing with your friends and throwing color at each other

7. You are addicted to at least two Indian soap operas

Bigger the bindi, more evil the aunty

8. A Bollywood song plays in your head every time you think about who your soulmate is

*casually singing and dancing in the rain*

9. Turmeric is the answer to all your skin problems

So what if your face is stained yellow for two days?

10. You always have a game plan for Black Friday Shopping

That time of year when you are buried in a mountain of catalogs and coupons

11. “Indian Princess” was your go-to Halloween costume

“Of course you can buy that $100 costume” -said no Indian parent EVER

12. You have learned some type of Indian Dance for the majority of your life

No, Bollywood and Bharatanatyam are not the same things

13. There's always that one Bollywood movie you can never get sick of watching

*cough cough Kal Ho Na Ho*

14. Your school lunch is basically an Indian Cuisine

There is never enough spicy food to satisfy you

15. You gossip in your mother tongue

Because it’s okay when the other person doesn’t know what you are saying about them right?

After everything an Indian-American girl goes through, an individual never forgets her roots and her culture. That's the beauty of experiencing two different cultures. It may be a challenge to find the perfect balance of both but one truly does get the "Best of both Worlds".

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
