There is just something about being from a small town. I may be biased, but being raised in a Southern small town is just about the best upbringing a child can have. From the churches every few blocks to Friday night football games, growing up in small town U.S.A is one of the best experiences possible. Here are 15 signs that you are from a water-tower town:
1. You see someone you know everywhere you go.
In a small town, you are bound to run into someone you know no matter where you may go. This is a blessing most of the time, even though it often feels like a curse.
2. There are more churches than stop lights.
There are approximately 30 churches in my hometown. Remember, the entire population of this tiny town is less than 7,000! Needless to say, small towns have an abundance of churches.
3. You pull over to the side of the road when a funeral procession passes by.
This is honestly one of the things that makes me so proud to be from a small town. We have respect. When that procession rolls by, you pull over, turn off the radio, and take off your hat. This is common practice. This is respect.
4. In a small town, you actually know the people you graduate with.
And you still say hi when you see them in town.
5. When you get a Wal-Mart, you know you've hit the big time.
Seriously, though. Wal-Mart is the social hub and mall of small towns.
6. Your town probably has an overabundance of fast food joints.
From Subway to McDonald's, small towns embrace their fast food joints. My hometown has about a dozen fast food places.
7. By 10 P.M., the town is dead.
Most places close by either 9 or 10. The struggle is real.
8. People actually use their blinkers.
No, I'm not joking. Blinkers are actually a thing.
9. We usually wave at people as they pass by.
Show yourselves friendly, folks!
10. Crime is pretty much non-existent.
The biggest "crime" in small towns is usually the senior prank each spring. You can truly feel safe in a small town.
11. The sno-cone shop on the corner is one of the best places on earth.
You know the one I'm taking about.
12. Your town probably has a small historic district.
Many water tower towns have a historic district, which reminds citizens of days past.
13. On Friday nights during football season, the entire town is at the high school stadium.
Friday night is football night. It's an unwritten rule.
14. The beauty salon and the barbershop are the places you can go to get the latest gossip and news.
It's true, y'all. The people here have some crazy stories.
15. When you're from a small town, you'll always go back home.
Our hometowns claim such a large part of our heart and we will always find our way back home.
By the way, Scotty McCreery explains what it means to be from a small town perfectly.
