You read all those lists on what to bring with you. You read all the articles you can find about what to expect and all the do’s and do-not’s. You listened to your older family members’ experiences. However, nothing could have prepared you for all the emotions that you will feel. Yes, you may have expected a few things, but even when you do feel them you feel ridiculous. There is only one word a person can say to that: don’t.
1. Crying when you say goodbye to your friends and family.
Almost everyone does, so don’t worry.
2. And being homesick sometimes.
It’s OK to miss your parents and friends.
3. Bringing your entire wardrobe with you…
…despite not listening to the fact that you were told you shouldn’t and then wearing the same sweatshirt to class for three weeks.
4. Gaining the “freshman 15” or a little weight.
It’s not inevitable, but it happens. However, there is always time for a little change.
5. And not working out a little more or eating healthier.
It’s not easy for everyone, and there isn’t mom and dad at the dinner table to tell you to finish the broccoli they put on your plate. There are plenty of things out there that can help you with that. (And, in my personal experience, apps, a Fitbit or something of the sort can help you.)
6. Getting lost on the way to class even after five campus tours.
It happens to everyone.
7. Or walking around campus with a map looking like a tourist.
It’s a big campus and it is much harder to navigate than the condensed, little high school you just graduated from.
8. Taking that 8 a.m. class even though everyone told you not to.
At least it’s over, and now you know not to ever take one again.
9. Bailing on your first party.
It’s OK, they can be intimidating; especially, if you haven’t found your groove in college yet.
10. Or going to that party.
Things happen. Not all people are party-people either.
11. Screwing up your laundry (and losing socks).
Even if you didn’t, you will at some point in your life.
12. Not joining a fraternity or sorority.
They aren’t for everyone, so don’t feel left out.
13. Or not getting more involved as you thought you would.
It was harder to put yourself out there more than you thought. However, you are in a totally new place and it is hard to put yourself out there — especially if you don’t have any friends along with you.
14. Wearing your student ID lanyard around your neck.
Automatically labeling you as a freshman. However, and this is a big however, it is convenient! (So, I will continue to do this when necessary.)
15. Not keeping in touch with your high school friends as much as you thought you would.
Everyone isn’t necessarily moving on, but you’re all at college trying to fit in and there is a lot more work to do. So with everyone going through their different schedules it is hard to find time to actually talk to someone. If someone doesn’t talk to you anymore, then they weren’t a real friend in the first place, so don’t stress.
Despite all the humor in these, they happened for a reason. They were mistakes that had to be made or lessons to be learned, and without them you wouldn’t be the person you are right now.
