For those of you who who are like me, staying up until all hours of the morning looking for the best film to give me goosebumps is a weekly norm. Whether it is a thriller, scary or just plain creeper movie, the horror genre will always have a special place in my heart. I love Netflix, but the vast collection of past and present movies can make it hard to navigate and find an actual good movie. It also doesn't help that the star rating system in play doesn't always accurately represent the content of the movie. I have actually found that some of the best movies are around two stars! It is the most frustrating thing to sit and search for hours for the right movie, just to then fall asleep halfway through. Well search no longer! Here are (in my opinion) some of the most titillating thriller/scary movies on Netflix right now.
15. The Shining
A classic! Even though some may not find this movie scary anymore (myself included), when you think about the year in which it was made, the effects are phenomenal. All of the creepy stares, the dramatic build up and the epic "Here's Johnny" line makes this a must see movie for every scary movie fanatic.
14. Would You Rather
This movie gives me the chills. When a group of desperate people get involved in a life or death game, things take a terrifying and gruesome turn. You'll definitely be covering your eyes during this one. The twist ending will make you fall into a love/hate relationship with this thriller.
13. Final Girl
12. V/H/S/2
As a critical movie lover, I will say that the acting in this movie isn't the most convincing at times. The reason it made my list though is because there is a jumpscare around every corner. This movie has many different scenes set up which keeps you interested and therefore easy to scare. A huge set up from the first one!
11. The Guest
Another "thinky" movie, this handsome guest becomes a very mysterious character and yet you still want to love him. As the movie further unfolds, you get so caught up into trying to figure out just what is going on that it becomes real to you. I've always thought if a movie can get you emotionally involved, it wins. This movie definitely wins in my book. Yet another twist ending, "The Guest" will have you wishing it had never ended.
10. Don't Blink
When a group of friends decides to have a weekend away from it all, they get way more than they bargained for. They literally get away from it ALL. As they slowly realize they are alone and one by one seem to vanish into thin air, your heart will sink trying to figure out the mystery. The stress of this movie alone is enough to get you but the more you watch the more it messes with your head. Of course, keeps you longing for more.
9. Apartment 143
Definitely one of the more freaky paranormal movies out there. You might start to feel like you can relate to this dysfunctional family until it goes from normal teenage girl throwing a fit to paranormal demon teenage girl throwing a fit. then again..what's the difference? But in all seriousness this demonic thriller scares you to the core and is a great late night movie. Definitely won't want to sleep after this one.
8. Dark Skies
One of the more "family friendly" type movies on this list (PG13), this alien movie has a very interesting underlying plot. With yet another twist ending added to the list, all of the thrills in this movie make it a very satisfying and lovely supernatural thriller. Personally, I love alien movies and there was no cheesiness adding to it. You'll get chills as you watch the nightmare unfold.
7. The Exorcism of Molly Hartley
This movie starts off strong with great special effects. The story of a reverend who made a mistake and a girl taken captive, the creepy and demonic nature of this movie will have you scared into the early hours of the morning. Viewers have called it one of the creepiest movies they have seen.
6. Come Back to Me
Earlier when i mentioned "just plain creeper movie" this is the one I was referring to. Sometimes you really should trust your gut when you get an eerie feeling about a person. This movie honestly just screws with your mind. The disturbing nature of this movie may even effect who you learn to trust.
5. The Lazarus Effect
One of my favorite movies, this thriller has a very good background story. Not only does it make you interested, but it does so before fear is thrown into the mix. Once you get mixed into this fame hungry group of scientists and see what happens when they try and play God, you may just start thinking to yourself "how far can science actually go?" That reality is what makes this movie so scary...well along with jump scares and the fact that people die.
4. Hush
The movie everyone has been raving about! This movie depicts a deaf woman trying to figure her way out of her house to get help as she is being stalked by a murderer outside. The worst part is that he has the upper hand in it all, he can hear where she is. You'll get completely immersed in the high tension of this silent nightmare.
3. At the Devil's Door
Our favorite Awkward. character is now not the awkward high school girl, but a naive girl who soon makes a deal with the devil. As she continues to stalk the house she lived in a realtor runs into her..only to find out it isn't her at all. What it is will give you nightmares. Don't play with the devil.
2. The Taking of Deborah Logan
THIS MOVIE....I don't think I will ever be able to get the ending scene out of my head. This elderly woman seems to be fragile and just kooky, but at the movie continues you realize she is way more than a woman suffering from Alzheimers. There is way more to her problems than her head; you should be more worried about her soul. Definitely a favorite when it comes to creepy paranormal movies.
1. The Den
no no....i mean THIS MOVIE. If the last one is freaky talk about this one.....I don't get scared scared easily. Frightened by a jump scare, sure! Scared during a movie or haunted house, ok. But scared to the point that I literally had to take my laptop and phone out of my room at night for a few days and I actually at one point slept in my sisters room because I was afraid to be alone......that is this movie. It doesn't seem that way at first. It seems like a low-budget scary movie. But the further it progresses, and the ideas it presents makes your stomach squirm. The scariest part? It is tangible. Everything that happens probably could if you weren't being careful online. Its a frightening must see!
