15 Reasons Why Autumn Is My Favorite Season

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

15 Reasons Why Autumn Is My Favorite Season
Michael Strickland

Clouds cover the sky and a gentle breeze dances through the trees as I sit on my front porch enjoying the balmy 68 degree temperatures. I know it is only the second week of August, but a teasing hint of autumn hovers in the atmosphere, prompting me to consider all the reasons why it is my favorite season of all.

1. Pumpkin Spice Everything

Of course, we might as well get this one over with. You either hate it or you love it, but I for one cannot wait for pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin scented candles. . .

2. Sweater Weather

Is there anything more cozy than an oversized sweater? I don't think so. I also love jackets, boots, flannel shirts, scarves, tights, and all that other cool weather attire. By this time of year I am tired of the t-shirt and shorts look.

3. Brisk Autumn Temperatures

I know many people love the sweltering summer sun, but I for one am more energized when I step out my front door to a crisp breeze that sends a little shiver down my spine.

4. Back to School

Some of you may have just shouted at me, but I don't care. I have always enjoyed school, even if it is sometimes stressful. I look forward to the start of a new year, and with this being my final year of college, back to school will be a little bittersweet. My school supplies are bought and my schedule finalized, so I can kick back and enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer break while I anticipate the start of the semester.

5. The State Fair

I can already taste the funnel cake. My favorite thing is walking around eating and people watching. . . you never know what kinds of strange characters you will find at the state fair.

6. Pumpkin Patches

I don't know why walking around a field of pumpkins is so fun, but it is.

7. Corn Mazes

Do you use the map or just wing it? I usually follow a group of friends and see where they take me, meanwhile picking out constellations and trying to figure out which way is north (not that this ever helps).

8. Bonfires

We don't have one every single year, but when we do, we always have fun. Friends, games, and s'mores are a good combination.

9. Halloween

I just love costumes, okay?

10. Candy

Candy corn and pumpkin-shaped Reese's are my favorites. My teeth hurt just thinking about them.

11. Vintage Markets

My mom and I love to go shopping for "junk," and autumn usually has a few opportunities to shop outdoor flea markets or barn sales. There's nothing like drinking a coffee and shopping around for a treasure in the chilly autumn air!

12. Fall Colors

We might not have many of the bright red trees that are so beautiful, but Kansas puts on a more subdued, golden hue during the autumn season. It is the Sunflower State, after all, and if you're lucky, you can find a sunflower field in full bloom right about now.

13. Cozy Days

Autumn is when the world starts to tuck in for the long winter haul, and as the temperatures become cooler, we spend more time indoors curled under a blanket with a hot apple cider and a good movie or book. For this introvert, it is a welcome change.

14. My Birthday

Okay, so this might not apply to very many other people, but I am an autumn baby and my birthday is one reason why I love fall!

15. Thanksgiving

The official start of the holiday season, Thanksgiving is always a treat. Delicious food, family, the Macy's parade. . . yes, even the dog show. I love them all. Not only is it a great time to stop and consider all that we are blessed with, but it's also the kick-off to my most favorite holiday, Christmas!

You could say I am a little excited for the quickly-approaching autumn season, and I hope this list has helped you become a little excited as well! What are some of your favorite things about fall?

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
