15 Reasons Why I Love Photography
Erin Landry

Photography is one of my favorite forms of art. It is so fun to go on a photoshoot with your friends and you always end up with artsy pictures for Instagram. It is such a creative way to capture the moments that matter and freeze time. All the photos stored on your SD card become a museum of memories that you will always have. It’s a perfect way to relive the important moments and share your experiences with people. These are 15 reasons I love photography!

1. Challenge.

It is not as easy as picking up a camera and pressing a button. There are many technical aspects that go into creating a strong image.

2. Mindset.

You get into the thought process of being a storyteller and how to get that story across. You can visualize what an image would look like from different angles before you even take the picture and how to execute the mood or emotion of the story.

3. Process.

Photography is a sort of meditative process; you almost have to let go of how you want an image to look and just allow the process to happen naturally. With meditation, you are calm and focused on breathing and staying grounded. By letting go of any expectations, you are allowing yourself to shoot in a calm relaxed state of mind and you welcome whatever results come out of the experience.

4. Infinite Possibilities.

The world looks different every single day so the possibilities are endless. You could take a picture of a sunset every single day. The subject will be the same, but it will always look different..

5. Beauty In Everything.

There is beauty in withering flowers and stormy days as well as sunny days and trees. You just have to look a little closer.

6. Different Interpretations.

One photograph has the power to be interpreted in thousands of different ways. Each person can take it in their own perspective and what it means to them. I find that incredible and so intriguing.

7. Emotional Response.

It can remind people of experiences they have been through or memories they have made in the past.

8. Reason To Travel.

There are so many places in the world that are worth exploring and photographing. My travel bucket list is too long for one lifetime.

9. Awareness.

You start to notice the details and become more conscious about the world around you.

10. Control.

Although you don’t have control of the weather, you do have control over how your photographs will look and how you want to share your perspective.

11. Expression.

You learn develop your own style and express yourself through your images.

12. The Perfect Shot.

When you finally get the perfect shot, it makes you happy and you feel like you've accomplished so much.

13. Access.

The world is your canvas and you can literally photograph anything. It gives you a reason to spend time in nature.

14. Connection.

It not only helps you become self aware but it also connects you to other people.

15. Memory Full.

I always photograph the subjects that mean the most to me and I am used to getting the Memory Full warning on not only my camera but my phone as well. It is honestly the best problem to have though because it means that you have people or experiences in your life that are worth photographing. When you are going through a hard time, you can look back at the memories you've made and realize that it's going to be okay!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
