15 Quotes That Sum Up College and College Students

Being a college student means a lot of things. There is so much to be said about college students. We are quite a unique group because we are facing one of, if not the, hardest transition in life and sometimes we don’t handle it all that well.

Actually, we never handle it that well. It’s impossible to handle anything perfectly, especially college. You look forward to college all summer then it starts. Two weeks later you look forward to graduation. That’s just the way it is. There are so many ways to describe or talk about college and the students that attend a college. Here are some of the best things that have ever been said about college and college students, by authors.

  1. “Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college.”

Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country

At least I went though.

2. “A university is just a group of buildings gathered around a library.”

Shelby Foote

Pretty much.

3. “Every year, many, many stupid people graduate from college. And if they can do it, so can you.”

John Green

Well that is inspiring then.

4. “Months are different in college, especially freshman year. Too much happens. Every freshman month equals six regular months—they're like dog months.”

Rainbow Rowell, Fangirl

In my second year, feels like my fourth.

5. “But if you tell folks you're a college student, folks are so impressed. You can be a student in anything and not have to know anything. Just say toxicology or marine biokinesis, and the person you're talking to will change the subject to himself. If this doesn't work, mention the neural synapses of embryonic pigeons.”

Chuck Palahniuk, Invisible Monsters

Good advice. I will remember that.

6.“The way I figure it, everyone gets a miracle.”

John Green, Paper Towns

This includes the class you weren’t prepared for being cancelled.

7. “College is fun as long as you don't die.”

Tsugumi Ohba, Death Note, Vol. 4: Love

Trying not to.

8. “Some people get an education without going to college. The rest get it after they get out.”

Mark Twain

Well at least education is coming either way.

9. “I’d compare college tuition to paying for a personal trainer at an athletic club. We professors play the roles of trainers, giving people access to the equipment (books, labs, our expertise) and after that, it is our job to be demanding.”

Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

Obviously written by a professor.

10. “Ah college years, those were the days. Pure freedom ... leaving home for the first time…the parties…”

"What about the tutorials, the lectures, the large building with all the books called the ‘library’?”

“Is that what those were?” Gerry blithely replied.”

E.A. Bucchianeri, Brushstrokes of a Gadfly

Hahahahahaha!

11. “I didn't give it much thought back then. I just wanted to get all the words straight and collect my A.”

Gayle Forman, Just One Day

Being completely serious this is so true.

12. “selling my soul for student loans and an education.”

Shareca Cole., Carpel Tunnel.

You do what you have to do.

13. “If you want to be a graduate student, you have to fall in love with reading.”

Lailah Gifty Akita, Think Great: Be Great!

Pretty much to be any student in college.

14. “College = A place where you spend a ton of money for a piece of paper that says you're qualified.”

Korey Miracle

Sounds about right.

15. “Oh, why does college have to happen to perfectly good people?”

Rick Riordan, The Hidden Oracle

I have been asking myself that for a year and a half.

There you have it! Some serious, some hilarious, but all pretty much sum up college and college students.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
