15 Questions You Ask During the Summer

I am a high school student, so summer to me consists of nothing but relaxing. Because I have so much free time, I tend to ask a lot of questions.

1. Should I start working out? I guess I don’t have anything else to do; my excuse was always that I was too busy. I'll start tomorrow!

2. Is it really that important to wear sunscreen? I don’t even burn and the tan lines will go away eventually, right? Wrong.

3. Should I call ____? We haven’t hung out in a long time and I kind of miss not seeing them everyday at school. I’ll just text them later.

4. What time is it? 7 AM? 8 PM? 2:30 AM? I have no idea, my phone is on the other side of the room.

5. Crap! Did I tell _____ that I would meet them at the mall today? I mean we were at a party and it was 2 AM, so did the plans really count?

6. What day is it? Saturday? Monday? Thursday? Anybody else know?

7. Is it possible to teach myself French? Maybe Italian? I want to be multilingual now, and high school Spanish is not cutting it.

8. What show should I start watching? *scrolls through Netflix for 12 hours*

9. Am I really hungry or am I just bored? Hungry, I’m definitely hungry. No, I was bored.

10. How do I get rid of tan lines? Is it even possible to get rid of tan lines? How can I wear this backless dress with those horrible racerback tan lines?

11. Who will take me on an adventure? I want to go hiking somewhere. I want to stargaze. Actually though, let's do something spontaneous.

12. Am I smart enough to discover something scientific right now? I’ll go digging in my backyard and maybe I will find the fossils of a new kind of dinosaur. Ooh! I'll dissect this dead bird and figure out how to make myself wings to fly! I'll start tomorrow, or something.

13. Should I write a book? Yeah, I’ll write a book about finding yourself and learning to love who you are. Wait, have I found myself? Do I love myself? *has a crisis*

14. Should I get a job? I mean it will look good on resumés. Sigh, I guess I’ll start looking tomorrow.

15. How is it July already? I swear we got out of school yesterday.

I really hope I’m not the only who asks these questions on a daily basis during the summer!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
