Anyone who knows me knows that pretty much 90% of my life revolves around bands. It’s not just the bands themselves that I fell in love with; it’s how they changed my life. Who they are as people and their songs have taught me so many life lessons and have changed my perspective on how I handle things, I’ve met many amazing people and have rekindled old friendships through them, and last, but not least, their lyrics have applied to me and many situations that I have gone through in my life; whether it made them go away even if it was only for a little while, or it helped me get through the tough times, I knew that the lyrics were always there to make me feel better. Everyone interprets and applies song lyrics to their lives in different ways, which is another reason why music is so powerful. Here are 15 lyrics that have helped not only me, but thousands of other people get through those tough time.
1. “Don’t lose your fight, kid. It only takes a little push to pull on through. With so much left to do, you’ll be missing out, and we’ll be missing you.” -Missing You, All Time Low
-- When you’re feeling so down and like there’s no escape from it all, I can promise you that there is. Whether that push is your family, your friends, a trusted adult or a beloved hobby, it will help you through whatever it is that you’re battling. Life is short and, there really is so much left to do.
2. “Sometimes, before it gets better, the darkness gets bigger. The person you’d take a bullet for is behind the trigger.” -Miss Missing You, Fall Out Boy
-- Even though it may not seem like it, sometimes you have to through something that you’d never wish on your worst enemy to see that life will get better. And in those tough times, we see who our true friends are, and it may surprise you to find out who really is there for you in your time of need.
3. “Sometimes, to stay alive, you gotta kill your mind.” -Migraine, twenty one pilots
--More often than we’d like to admit, depressing and terrifying thoughts can fill our brains and take over to the point where we are constantly down and can’t find a way out. To fight this, sometimes the only way out is to shut your mind off completely and ignore what it’s filling your head with.
4. “I won’t fade away, be forgotten or just cast away. This life is mine to live.” - Old Scars/Future Hearts, All Time Low
-- Living your life for yourself and nobody else is truly how you can live to your potential. You’ve only got one life, so make it count. Don’t be forgotten, make your mark on this world while you still have time. Nobody truly knows how much time they have left.
5. “If you can wait till I get home, then I swear come tomorrow, this will all be in our past. It might be for the best.” - If It Means a lot to You, A Day to Remember
-- Every day is a new day. It’s a new day to start over and repair friendships and relationships. Sometimes it’s best to put the past behind you and move on, you never know how much time you have left with someone.
6. “Life is too short to last long.” - Bored to Death - Blink-182
--Life is short, so do all that you can in the time that you have. But it also doesn’t last long, so you have to make every second count.
7. “I can’t find a wall to pin this to, they’re all coming down since I’ve found you. I just want to be where you are tonight, I run in the dark looking for some light.” - Light Up the Sky, Yellowcard
-- People can put up walls because certain events can change them, and it can be hard to trust someone. Sometimes, you meet that one person that changes things and shows you how to love again. And it can be truly beautiful.
8. “If you love me let me go, cause these words are knives that often leave scars, the fear of falling apart. And truth be told, I never was yours, the fear, the fear of falling apart.” - This is Gospel, Panic! At the Disco
-- This can be interpreted in many different ways depending on the person. Words can hurt and can leave a lasting impact, which is something that many people do not realize. “If you love me let me go,” can have many different meanings as well, but one that stands out to me is if you’re in a relationship that is broken beyond compare, sometimes you have to let that person go, no matter how bad it hurts.
9. “Run, like it’s time that’s chasing us, like you will never find enough, like you forgot the words “give up,” and live, to close the distance.” -Close the Distance, Go Radio
--When you “close the distance,” you’re moving closer and closer to something or someone that you’ve always wanted or dreamed of. When you start moving closer to whatever it is, you start to forget about your time left on earth and you don’t think about giving up. You are going after something that you desperately want and you won’t let anything stand in the way of that.
10. “Throw it away, forget yesterday, we’ll make the great escape. We won’t hear a word they say, they don’t know us anyway. Watch it burn, let it die, cause we are finally free tonight.” -The Great Escape, Boys Like Girls
--This can also be interpreted in many ways, but for me, I see this as breaking free from something or somebody that is bothering you. You hold your head high and ignore what people are saying about you because they truly don’t know you. You let those words they say die and forget about them, and once you do that, you can finally be free and happy.
11. “Without you, I live it up a little more everyday. Without you, I’m seeing myself so differently. I didn’t wanna believe it then, but it all worked out in the end. When I watched you walk away, well I never thought I’d say I’m fine without you.” -Without You, Hinder
-- Getting rid of the toxic people in your life can seem like the end of the world if they convinced you that you wouldn’t be able to live without them, but once you finally do get rid of them, your perspective on life will start to change and you will see yourself in a new way. You will be more than okay without those toxic people in your life and it’ll all work out in the end.
12. “And I don’t really care if nobody else believes, cause I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me.” - Fight Song, Rachel Platten
--When you’re down, you know who your friends are in your time of need. But sometimes what it takes to get through those tough times is knowing that you can push through and fight your way out, as long as you believe in yourself.
13. “So God, give me the strength to do what you created me to do.” -Miles Away, Memphis May Fire ft. Kellin Quinn
--This song is about how hard it is for Matty Mullins to leave his wife every time he leaves on tour, but he knows that his fans need him. But this specific line can be interpreted in many ways, as can every line in every song. When god gives you strength, you can conquer just about anything as long as you believe that you have that strength.
14. “It’s time we drift apart, we’re blind and in the dark. I kinda wanna care but it’s kinda too late to start.” - F U till I F U, CallMeKarizma
--For the sake of both parties, sometimes when a relationship ends, there are things on both sides that are better left unsaid. Getting over a person and no longer caring about them is blunt, as is the whole song, but sometimes it’s how you just have to get over someone.
15. “But there’s a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark, you should know you’re beautiful just the way you are. You don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart.” - Scars to your Beautiful, Alessia Cara
-- In today’s world, beauty standards are mostly unrealistic and the idea of what is considered beautiful leaves a lot of people feeling like they aren’t perfect or they aren’t beautiful. Everyone is beautiful, no matter who you are, how much you weigh or what you look like. As long as you’re comfortable in your own skin, then that’s all that matters.
All of these songs, along with thousands more, can be interpreted and applied to everyone’s situation. This just reminds us how powerful music is and how it can help you through anything that you are going through, whether it be good or bad. Remember to always stay positive and keep your head held high, and you can get through anything that life throws at you.
