15 Phrases Every College Student Loves to Hear..

Each and every semester we start in college, we head to our new classes hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst because anything can happen. The professor hands out the syllabus in preparation of what is to come in the course. As you start to go over it with the professor, you start to notice a couple things that make you smile or make you feel like you’re going to like this class better than others. The professor starts talking about expectations and how he/she has organized this semester. Some of these things that we like to hear from the professor or see in the syllabus include:

  1. There is no final exam.
    1. Hearing this is literally amazing. One less final to worry about during finals week!
  2. Class is cancelled.
    1. Even though people pay for classes, we don’t mind seeing that class is cancelled once in awhile. This is even better when you haven’t finished the homework or something. It can really make your day!
  3. The textbook is available online for free.
    1. Free stuff in college is hard to come by which is why when we hear “FREE” in reference to the required text, it’s like holy words to our ears. The more money you save on textbooks, the better.
  4. Textbook is not required for the course.
    1. This goes right along with number 3, but this point is even better because textbooks can be a burden to carry around campus sometimes so if you don’t need one for a class, then GREAT!
  5. You can leave early today since I’m done lecturing..
    1. Leaving class early is always a perk. The thing is that you don’t know when this will happen which makes it better sometimes like a bonus. You can grab a snack if you’re hungry or get just extra free time before the next class.
  6. You can bring food to class.
    1. I love when professors say this because food is very necessary for learning. If I don’t get my fuel, then I probably won’t pay attention or learn much. We all get hungry so being able to bring food to a class is always a plus.
  7. I don’t take attendance.
    1. I should feel a little guilty for putting this on the list, but come on guys. We all like it when the professor doesn’t know your name so that you can skip class without them really caring. Sometimes you just don’t feel like going or need a day off, it happens to everyone.
  8. There is no homework in this course.
    1. Having no homework in college especially is rare, but it does happen sometimes. It’s mostly in classes that only consists of like 3-4 exams for the determination of the course grade. Remember if there is no homework, then you’ll probably have to study harder for the exams in order to succeed in the course.
  9. Exams are open-notes or you can bring a cheat sheet..
    1. Exams like this are always welcomed in college classes especially when the class is tougher and there is a lot more to remember/learn for the exam. It also demonstrates how good your notes are in class. You should pretty much be acing these types of exams.
  10. I’m extending the deadline..
    1. Extensions aren’t very common either in college, but sometimes the professor may feel like the students need more time. At the same time, that doesn’t mean you should procrastinate even more.
  11. You don’t need to present the group project..
    1. Many people fear public speaking which is why they would love to hear this phrase. Most group projects include presentations, but not all the time which takes off some pressure.
  12. You can choose your groups..
    1. Most people like when the professor says this because that means that they can work with their friends unless you don’t know anybody in that class, then it’s awkward. It really depends on the class and what type of people are in that class. You always want to get a good grade which is the ultimate goal.
  13. All Slides/Lectures will be posted.
    1. I love professors who post their slides up that way I can keep up with the material if I miss class for some reason. I can always reference them when doing homework or studying for an exam.
  14. Here’s a study guide for the exam..
    1. Study guides are always helpful when studying for an exam because they pinpoint the main areas to focus on when studying. The more specific it is for the student, the better.
  15. The exam is all multiple choice, no open response..
    1. I don’t want to say that this is always a good thing to hear because that’s not completely true. Multiple choice can be tricky and confusing too, but you also have a higher probability of getting it right. It really depends on what class we’re talking about because each class is different when it comes to examination.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
