I’ve worked in child care for the past two years, and the students I’ve worked with have taught me a lot. Anyone who works with kids will tell you that every day is an emotional roller coaster. Working with kids requires copious amounts of patience and energy. The saying, “take the good with the bad,” truly takes on a new meaning. Working with kids is strange; although they drive you up the wall 90% of the time, oddly enough, sometimes they inspire you. The kids you work with infiltrate your life but despite all the rough patches, it is one of the most fulfilling jobs you can have. However, most days you just wish you had the power to control minds so you could have an easy work day.
1. The moment when that one kid has their daily meltdown
After tantrum #5, we’re honestly just baffled at how you can continue to put yourself through this torture. We’re not phased by your antics anymore and we know you’ll finally come to your senses in a few minutes and we’ll go through this again tomorrow.
2. When one of your students accuses you of being mean
Yes, I try to be nice as frequently as possible. No, I am not here to be your friend. Don't worry, this feeling will pass when you need something from me.
3. When something happens and all 10 witnesses feel the need to tell you...at the same time.
You would think the confused look on your face would let them know that you don’t understand a single word they’re saying.
4. When it’s homework time and multiple students try pulling the old “I don’t have any homework” trick.
Now sit down and start on this homework sheet before your parents come to pick you up.
5. When your students won't just sit down
Is it really so hard for kids to just sit down, listen, and relax? Is it?
6. When parents bring in treats for your staff
Sharing is caring, especially when it’s food.
7. When your student says something inappropriate but funny
It's so hard not to laugh sometimes but I get most of my comedic gold from my students
8. Crafts
It’s totally fine that your craft doesn’t look like my sample; we’re all artists in our own way!
9. Crafts
I love using glitter in my crafts but every time, without fail, I leave work like this and I regret my poor choices.
10. When “that” parent makes a complaint
It’s amazing someone could have that much to complain about every single day/week.
11. Fridays or holiday weekends
This applies to students and coworkers.
12. When they say your name 10 billion times
Sometimes I get tired of hearing my own name. If I am making eye contact with you, I guarantee you have my attention and you can stop saying my name.
13. Having to communicate with your eyes
Sometimes you can’t use words, or words simply aren’t enough.
14. When your most hyper student is being disturbingly quiet
Are they sick? Are they scheming? Are they even in the room?
15. When it’s a generally good day...or just Friday
Don’t get me wrong, I love working with kids and working with them hasn’t changed my desire to have some of my own some day! If anything, I’ve just learned which names my future children can never have.
Now go out and influence those children and try to remain sane!
