It was predicted that nearly 15 million people would tune in to watch this week’s GOP debate. I was definitely one of those people. Typically, I wait until it gets down to the nitty-gritty to really be attentive to the debates and such. But, for some unknown reason, I lent an ear to the candidates early this year. After watching the debate and mulling over what the candidates had to say, the only plausible solution I could come up with as to why so many people, who are on the same page as myself, were watching the debate was because of Donald Trump.
Now, that being said, at this point I have no earthly idea who would be the most qualified or the “best” person for the very challenging job that is being our nation’s next president. However, something about Donald Trump made me watch the GOP Debate, so he’s got something going for him. Was it his commanding presence? His absurd statements? His humor? I don’t know, and probably never will. But what I do know is that I watched the whole thing, alongside nearly 15 million others. It’s still early in the race and the finish line isn’t in sight yet. Nonetheless, it can’t hurt any candidate's campaign to start racking in the votes early.
Throughout the debate, Trump answered most of the questions directed at him with an answer that could’ve, no doubt, been more concise. However, he made some very interesting points, like his motion to build a wall in efforts to fight illegal immigration, his statement about not having time to be politically correct, and others. At one point, he even looked directly at Rand Paul and told him that he “wasn’t doing that well.” Most of the chatter that surrounds Trump is controversial. Most people either love him or hate him; there aren’t many who feel in between the two extremes. Nevertheless, it still remains that people are talking about him, and they’re clearly listening to what he has to say, whether they agree with it or not.
So, the question remains: Would Donald Trump make an effective president? It’s hard to say, really. I mean, the guy has guts; I’ll give him that. And, honestly, it seems that he really couldn’t care less about what people think. As he has stated on numerous occasions, he has a plan. Now he just wants the opportunity to execute it. We, as a nation of voters, just have to decide whether or not we want someone like that in the White House.
