So you’re queer and the only songs played on the radio are oozing in heterosexual loving. And you don’t know where to start to look for some sapphic or boys loving boys music. Have no fear because I’m about to list some of my favorite songs from my Queer playlist!
1. Rent- "Take Me or Leave Me"
Rent? You're probably groaning right now. Sure, this song is a couple fighting, but it's a bouncy, catchy song of two of my favorite onstage musical couples in one of my favorite musicals. The rest of the Rent soundtrack might be sad and make me cry, but at least this one can be a bit lighter than the others.
2. Mary Lambert- "She Keeps Me Warm"
Internet jokes and memes aside, this song is amazing. Mary Lambert is amazing. It's a shame that this song didn't make it to the top 40 radio stations because it's, in my opinion, so much better than Macklemore's same love, that sources the chorus. You can listen to and watch the lyric video here.
3. Angel Haze- "How To Love"
Angel Haze's "How To Love" is relaxing and uplifting. It's so great to have music to listen to that's written by trans and same-gender attraction people. I found Angel Haze through their cover of Same Love, that you can listen to here. Keep in mind there's strong language. Listen to How to Love here.
4. Neon Jungle- "Take Me To Church Cover"
Neon Jungle made me actually like "Take Me To Church." The group sadly broke up in 2015, but this cover gives me life every time I listen to it. Plus, the song actually makes sense with four amazing women singing it, rather than a group of all men.
5. The Magnetic Fields- "I Thought You Were My Boyfriend"
I hadn't heard of this song or the Magnetic Fields until someone recommended it. I enjoy listening to it while working on assignments for classes and dancing around in my room when I'm feeling in the mood for it. Take a listen here!6. Queen- "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy"
And of course Queen is going to make an appearance on a queer playlist. This song, if you hadn't heard it until now, is sure to always get your foot or head bopping to the beat.7. The Decemberists- "The Soldiering Life"
This song is really cute and and I like having it on hand to listen to every now and then. I prefer the live version (x) to the music video (x) but either way the song is a must listen.8. Cosmo Jarvis- "Gay Pirates"
This is one of my favorite songs I have on my playlist. What's not to like about a song about gay pirates that's literally called "Gay Pirates?" One of my friends noted this song would make perfect sense in Shakespeare's "12th Night," and my other friend learned how to play it on the ukulele and played it at a Renn Fest where we all dressed as pirates. Fair warning; the lyrics of this song contain the r-word (referring to sexual assault). Listen and watch the music video here!
9. The Pipettes- "I Like A Boy In Uniform"
My friends make fun of me for liking this song, but I do! This song will get stuck in your head really easily and is very repetitive, but that just makes it easier to memorize! Plus, canon bisexuals in songs?! That hardly ever happens!
10. Hello Saferide- "My Best Friend"
This song is also pretty cute and light-hearted. The animation is really cute and11. Rent- "I'll Cover You"
Obviously I wasn't going to end this list without mentioning "I'll Cover You" (No, not the reprise! It's too sad!). This song is so hopeful and beautiful, especially considering the rest of the musical.
12. Hailey Wojcik- "Anglerfish"
Hailey Wojcik's music and music videos are incredible. This is the first song I heard by her. The lyrics and upbeat music makes it the perfect thinking-about-your-ex breakup song-- vengeful and petty with the full knowledge of it.
13. The Studio Killers- "Jenny"
This song had kept The Studio Killers fans in suspense and anticipation for the release of the music video for over a year- and did not disappoint. The art style and animation of the video fits so well with the song and is an experience. Click the gif to watch and listen!14. Black Kids- "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You"
Get out of here, "Glee." The original song and music video is much more fun and in general way better than its cover from the Fox Network TV show.15. Hayley Kiyoko- "Girls Like Girls"
This music video is so important to me. Every time I'm feeling discouraged, watching it instantly makes me happier. Hayley Kiyoko directs all of her music videos and they're incredible. Watch this one here. There are, of course, so many other great LGBT songs by LGBT artists, but I can't gush about every single one (I'd be writing for awhile). I hope you've found some new great artists to listen to in the meantime!
