15 Lessons Severus Snape Taught Me

We have lost one of the most amazing and talented actors. We mourn the loss of an actor that taught us so much. Alan Rickman, also known as Severus Snape on the beloved movie series, "Harry Potter," lost his fight with cancer.

His character has been through an immense amount of pain throughout his time. He was well-loved and well-hated by the fans. He was the biggest bully, but also the biggest hero. It is sad to know that cancer has taken this amazing man from us. In order to celebrate his life, here are some words of wisdom he shared with us through Snape.

1. "After all this time?" Dumbledore said to Snape. Snape replied, "Always."

This quote taught me that love will always be there through time. Snape had a hard time looking at Harry, because he looked like the love of his life, his mother Lily. Everything he has done was for her, no matter what he does.

2. " You have used me. I have spied for you, lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter's son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter." - Snape to Dumbledore

He wanted the best for Harry, no matter what he thought. This proves that Snape has a heart and actually cared for the boy. If he was as cruel as he portrayed himself, he would not want to protect Lily's son.

3. " Well, it may have escaped your notice, but life isn't fair." - Snape

Life is indeed not fair. We may hope for something to happen, but it may not happen the way we would like it. We do not need to make a big deal about life being fair, we just need to accept that everything happens for a reason.

4. "I seem heartless because my heart died with her" - Snape about Lily

Let's all think for a moment. If Lily and Snape ended up together, the whole movie would have been different. Pain and love has made Snape become who he was chosen to become. He is a great teacher and great protector. Even though he seems harsh to Harry, he has helped him in more ways than one. He never wanted Harry to die.

5. "You don't pretend to be a death eater to save Harry Potter's life without making a few enemies."

He knew that protecting Harry'd life meant doing something that he would normally never have thought of. He was brave to do what he did, though he was also very stupid.

6. "You dare use my own spells against me, Potter? Yes. I'm the Half-Blood Prince."

The realization is that he was much stronger than we have originally thought. I would have never guessed that he would have so much power.

7. "Control your emotions. Discipline your mind!"

Snape was sometimes a very wise man and a very stupid one. He knew that if you controlled your emotions and disciplined your mind, you would think, and the outcome would be much better.

8. "Mr. Potter. Our new celebrity."

His first words to Mr. Potter. The first words to a person are connected with the first impression of a person. Surely, Harry Potter did not know that he was a celebrity in the very first film. But others knew of him, but he did not know about himself until later.

9. “Fools who wear their hearts proudly on their sleeves, who cannot control their emotions, who wallow in sad memories and allow themselves to be provoked this easily — weak people, in other words — they stand no chance against his powers!”

He knows that his love for Lily needs to be hidden, because he might be seen as weak by those surrounding him. He knows that Lord Voldemort would kill him instantly and that he would never stand a chance. He must also hide his true feelings to protect Harry, instead of dying without trying.

10. "You ought to be careful. People will think you’re… up to something.”

This one speaks for itself. He sees something like James in Harry and warns him that he has to be careful.

11. "You are just like your father. Lazy and arrogant."

We all know Snape never liked James. Harry did not know what his father did to Snape, all he knew was what his father did when he grew up and out of his teenage years. Snape may have hated James, but if he loved Lily, he would have never said anything like that to Harry.

12. "I may vomit."

Do not displease Snape or he will vomit.

13. " And if I ever hear you criticize the way I teach again, YOU WILL BE SORRY."

He will not tolerate his students being disrespectful of him. He knows that they will need to know everything he teaches them for when they start practicing or ever need to use potions. This just proves even more that he is a good teacher.

14. "Five more points from Gryffindor for being an INSUFFERABLE KNOW-IT-ALL."

Miss Granger sure knew what she was talking about, but was it right to take the points away from her. Sure, he wants to give others a chance, but he knows that if they do not know, she does.

15. " The mind is not a book to be opened at will and examined at leisure."

He surely was a wise man. He new that the mind is a powerful part of our body. He knew that it's where we kept our deepest secrets. Knowledge is power.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.
