Today, I officially completed my first week of college. To say it was a week of ups and downs would be an understatement, and it's been by far the most unique and foreign week of my life. I knew it would be that way, but what I didn't expect is how much I love college so far! Famous last words, I suppose, but it's important to savor this new, thrilling part of our lives. It's been a week, and I've already learned so many fundamentals about the college experience.

1. Literally no one cares how you're dressed or if you're wearing makeup.

You've probably read this many times before, but I'd like to emphasize the truth to it.

2. Having a roommate is actually amazing.

It might seem awkward suddenly having to share a room with someone you've never met before, but it's not. It's actually really nice to have somebody to talk to and keep you company!

3. There are so many people and resources dedicating to helping you with anything you might need.

Don't be afraid to ask for help, no matter how trivial your question might seem. Everyone on campus is there to help you learn and grow, and they are willing to help you in any way possible.

4. Professors are actually *gasp* human beings.

Although they can be strict, your professors are there to help you develop as a student and professional, and they want to help you do that! They're not nearly as scary as you might expect, and they're actually pretty cool. Don't be afraid of them.

5. It's okay to not have a bunch of friends right away.

Don't worry about making loads of friends as soon as classes start. You'll make friends more naturally in your classes and around campus, and the friendships will be much more solid.

6. Waiting until the first day of classes to find where to go is NOT smart.

Scope out your classes before they start...just do it. You'll be glad you did once classes start and you're in a time crunch to get to class.

7. It's completely okay to be scared.

New, major things can be scary, but just remember that you're not the only one feeling that way!

8. It's also okay to feel stressed.

Once you get into the swing of things and establish a normal routine, you'll feel much more relaxed and prepared.

9. SLEEP.

You'll feel SO much better if you're getting a solid 8 hours each night.

10. EAT.

Your body needs nourishment. Like sleep, establishing a regular eating schedule (that are healthy, if you can help it) is so important in making sure you feel right. And for the love of all things...don't skip breakfast (unless your schedule leaves you no choice.)!

11. HYDRATE.

It's so easy to fall behind on drinking water, and when you start to get dehydrated, you'll feel it. Keep water with you at all times, and drink it every chance you get.

12. Your mental health is not worth compromising just to enhance your academic performance.

Work and study are important, but don't feel obligated to constantly devote your free time to your classes. Take time for yourself to do something you enjoy and de-stress every once in a while. Mentally you'll feel much more relaxed and invigorated.

13. You're oftentimes MUCH better at adjusting to major life changes than you might think.

Just trust me on this one.

14. And the whole college experience is not nearly as bad or scary as you make it out to be in your head.

In fact, it's actually amazing.

15. Your first week of college is when your whole life starts to change... but embrace it!

Savor the newfound freedoms and experiences it'll bring, because if you do, you're sure to have the time of your life!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
