While many of us are probably going on vacation with our families or friends this summer, just as many are probably looking at spending the whole summer in the Queen City, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t have fun! Here are some ideas for a staycation in Cincinnati- small day trips and cool places to go to that are free or mostly free for when you start to feel cabin fever this summer.

1. The Cincinnati Art Museum

Located in the gorgeous Eden Park, the Cincinnati Art Museum is a great spot for a fun day out. The museum has free admission, and displays various forms of art. Right now there is an exhibition open until August 28th, 2016 called 30 Americans and it is a must-see! Comprised of the art work of African-American artists, this exhibition weaves a tale of racial and gender identity in a stunningly emotional format. The Cincinnati Art Museum is a true gem and should be on your summer to-do list!

2. Fernbank Park

Located on the river, this park is perfect for a walk with your favorite furry friend or a picnic with some pals. With a walking/biking trail, a clear view of the Ohio River, and plenty of space to play a game or read a book, Fernbank Park is perfect for a beautiful summer day spent outdoors. The park is free and has ample parking, and if you’re looking for a space to do an impromptu photo shoot with your friends, Fernbank is as beautiful as it is lively.

3. Carew Tower Observation Deck

Before the Great American Building was constructed, Carew Tower was the tallest building in our skyline. Visitors can go all the way up to the 49th floor and onto the observation deck where panoramic views of the city can be enjoyed. Carew Tower still houses offices today, but is rumored to be haunted, so maybe on your way up to the top you’ll encounter a lost spirit. For only $4, this is a Cincinnati experience that you cannot miss!

4. Fountain Square

The center of the downtown scene, Fountain Square is always alive and bustling. There are events located here throughout the summer- including free concerts, salsa dancing, and viewing of important games via large tv screens. Fountain Square is a wonderful spot to grab a bite to eat with some friends, and perfect for people-watching. All you need is a group of pals and a place to park!

5. Smale Riverfront Park

This park has truly become a staple in summer fun in Cincinnati since its creation. With the perfect view of the river and the Roebling Suspension Bridge, and the unique interactive experiences from fountains to large piano keys embedded in the pavement, this park is a great way to spend a few hours out of the house. While here, take a selfie with some friends on the swings, and don’t forget to catch the Cincinnati landmark inspired Carousel!

6. Summer Festivals

If you’ve lived in Cincinnati for a while, you know that summer means an endless amount of church and neighborhood festivals. They might seem lame when you think of all your middle school festival memories, but if you’re looking for a cheap night out what could be better than a few carnival games and some funnel cake? Let your inner child out for a night and hit up your local festival, it sure beats another night on the couch!

7. Krohn Conservatory

Located in Eden Park, the Krohn Conservatory is a great place to spend a rainy day. Missing out on the sunshine, heat and wonder of nature? Head to the conservatory, and be amazed by the abundance of color and lushness in its greenhouses. Tropical plants, bonsai trees, cacti and butterflies coexist in this magical spot, and the admission is less than ten dollars. You could even go to the Krohn and the Art Museum on the same day, as they are located in the same park.

8. Free or Reduced Admission Days at Cincinnati Attractions

There are lots of free days and reduced prices at various Cincinnati attractions throughout the summer. For example, the Cincinnati Museum Center will be hosting a Free Friday on June 3rd from 4-8pm ($4 parking fee). There are plenty of special offers throughout the summer if you look for them!

9. The Main Branch Library

The Main Branch of the Cincinnati Public Library system is located downtown and is free to explore. This library boasts multiple floors of books, a wide selection of movies and CD, a children’s center, a café/gift shop, 3-D printers, need I say more? If you’re a book lover looking for a day out of the house, head to the main branch library with a tote bag to carry your loot home in. Best part is, main branch library books can be returned to your local library branch at no extra charge.

10. Shakespeare in the Park

Every summer Cincy Shakes puts on free performances in the parks. This summer’s performances will run at various locations from July 29th- September 1st. This season’s shows are: Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Romeo and Juliet. Bring the Bard into your summer festivities and enjoy free access to one of Cincinnati’s best theatre companies! (Information on locations and showings can be found at http://cincyshakes.com/events/free-shakespeare-in-the-park/)

11. Washington Park

With a phenomenal view of Music Hall and only a short walking distance to hip shops and restaurants in Over the Rhine, Washington Park is a great spot for experiencing Cincinnati’s culture. There are events located here all throughout the summer, including free fitness/yoga classes and free concerts, and parking right underneath the park! Aside from its calendar of events, Washington Park is also a beautiful spot with a fountain that has a colored light display at night and a cute gazebo perfect for picnics. This should definitely be an addition to your summer plans!

12. Cincinnati Red Bikes

Not too long ago, Cincinnati installed bike racks throughout the city that house red bikes for rent. For $8 you can get a 24 hour valid day pass, and you’re free to roam the city on the bikes. You have to exchange your bike every 60 minutes at one of the other bike racks, as an accountability check, but it’s a great way to see the city and get some exercise!

13. Movies in the Park

Some parks this summer will be offering free movies on the lawn for visitors, this is a great way to have movie night with some buds but not be stuck inside! There will be a Summer Cinema series in Washington Park every Wednesday at 9pm from June 1st- Aug 31st, Mount Adams puts on Cinema in the City in the Seasongood Pavilion in Eden Park (details TBA), and many other parks also feature outdoor movie showings. A lot of the showings are kid friendly too, so if you’re babysitting or have a little one in the family there will be showings of movies like Zootopia and Madagascar for them!

14. The Parkland Theatre

This is a hidden gem in Saylor Park, the Parkland Theatre has $6 movie showings every day of the week, a cute snack stand, a pre-movie lazer show, and super comfy seats. If you’re looking for a cheap movie date with an intimate setting, or a place to relax and catch a flick with your friends, the Parkland is a place you should try out!

15. Soft-Serve Ice Cream

Last but definitely not least, hit up your favorite soft-serve ice cream places this summer. Family-owned businesses like Zip Dip and Sweets ‘n Eats are sure to please everyone with their deliciously affordable ice cream and summer vibes. Don’t let this summer end without getting your favorite ice cream!

So whether you’re going on vacation or not this summer, make sure to spend some quality time in your hometown! The Queen City is rich in awesome things to do, be sure not to miss out!

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
