You’re almost there.
Freedom is so close you can almost taste it, but for now all you’re tasting is seventeen coffees, tears and regret. But you can make it! Before you know it finals will be over and you’ll be home playing with your dog eating twice your weight in food! So here’s my favorite Christmas songs to pump me for the end of the semester!
15. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
The 1963 hit from Darlene Love is one sure to get you pumped. There’s no way you can’t stop head bobbing to the beat, probably distracting everyone around you but making you pumped for the coming days.
14. Do They Know It’s Christmas
The 1984 and 2014 versions were created to raise awareness and money for famine in Ethiopia and the Ebola crisis in West Africa respectively. They both feature a collaboration of popular artists coming together, similar to “We Are The World”. And while there’s some questionable lines, like “Well tonight thank God it’s them, instead of you”, the overall message is to be thankful for what you have and remember that not everyone is that lucky. So when you’re complaining about all the work you have for the very pricey your parents can pay for, remember not everyone has that opportunity.
13. Sleigh Ride
Ella Fitzgerald’s smooth voice will glide you through the piles of studying you’ve been avoiding for weeks. Instead of being stuck in the library, just imagine you’re actually comfy and cozy on a sleigh ride.
12. Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
Man. John Lennon is good. Here you are, studying and crying, thinking about the presents and cookies and decorations for Christmas, and then good old Yoko and John come on in and get you to reflect on the past year. You start thinking, “Dude, did I actually do anything this year?” and then you put your head down and bust your butt because you don’t want another lecture from Lennon next year.
11. Fairytale of New York
If you are under 40, you probably have no idea what this song is, so that’s why you have me here to help you. Celtic punk band The Pogues released this banger in 1987, about an Irishman getting way too drunk on Christmas Eve in New York City and reflecting on a woman he lost. It’s hilarious, beautiful, and Shane MacGowan’s accent is amazing.
10. Mary, Did You Know?
No matter what version you choose (Obviously Pentatonix is top notch), it’ll be a jam. It’s one of those metacognitive songs, where you’re talking about all the amazing things a little baby will do, all of the crazy miracles. So even if you feel like you have done anything significant with your life yet, just know Mary probably didn’t Jesus was going to be this famous either.
9. Someday At Christmas
So if you’re still whining about all your work and how life is so unfair, call up Stevie Wonder, and he’ll inspire you to dream. To dream about a Christmas beyond presents, where for just one day, everyone can feel peaceful. And just because you might not be there to see it, it doesn’t mean you should stop working for it.
8. It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas
You’ve been typing your paper for eight hours. You’ve made 100 flash cards and none of them make sense. You’ve stared at the same page over and over again. Close your eyes. Breathe in, and imagine a perfect Christmas scene, the ones you always see on Hallmark movies. You’ll be there soon, you can make it.
7. Let It Snow
You want to listen to this song for a few reasons. First, it’s upbeat and happy, it’ll make you want to take a little study break and dance around. Next, it reminds you there’s still fun stuff in winter beyond Christmas, because who doesn’t love sledding instead of class??? Finally, maybe if snows hard enough, your finals will be cancelled! You can dream!
6. Christmas Eve- Sarajevo
Consider your walk up song for finals. You’ve been studying and grinding for hours and now it’s time to prove yourself. If you had One shot Or one opportunity To seize everything you ever wanted In one moment Would you capture it , Or just let it slip? Just kidding this is the Trans-Siberian Orchestra we’re talking about, not Eminem, but still just as effective. Believe in yourself and get ready to kick ass.
5. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
No, I’m not about the kiddie version, but the real deal in my man Bruce Springsteen. This legend turned an okay song into a party banger. Now you can belt it out your car window and you’ll only get mildly weird looks! No matter if you fail your finals, Santa will still come to town. (But try to do well)
4. Jingle Bell Rock
You need to power through something? Put this song on, I call it a no-fail. You’ll be crushing through your work in no time. If the Plastics can do this song acapella at the Talent Show in Mean Girls, you can make it through your work.
3. Baby It’s Cold Outside
The perfect duet, in my opinion. Whether you’re working on a group project, studying together or just need some socialization, grab a buddy and belt this one out. Sure, people might say there’s some…questionable lines, but there’s nothing better than dancing around a room playing this. This song will energize you more than a coffee, I promise.
2. O Holy Night
The song of all Christmas songs. The only reason it’s not #1 is because it might make you a little emotional, and make studying a little harder. But fear not, this song is about the holiest night of the year, when a true miracle occurred. If you think Jesus’ s birth was a miracle, you better believe that a miracle can help you with your semester grades too.
1. All I Want For Christmas Is You
So I’m sure you’ve never, ever heard this song before. I hadn’t either until a friend played it for me the other day, but I though, Wow, this is fun!!! Mariah Carey takes you out of all the stress of school and present shopping and family drama to put you in a singing and dancing mood. Studying seems easy with this song in your head, and when you’re taking your exam, just think that you’re one step closer to freedom.
