Ah, middle school. For many of us that means MySpace and years of awkwardness. We also can't forget taking peace sign selfies with your besties so that you can over-edit them later, and the music. They say that sound is profoundly linked to memory, so I hope these songs take you back, way way back.
1. Rihanna: "Umbrella"
"Now that it's raining more than ever / Know that we'll still have each other / You can stand under my umbrella / You can stand under my umbrella / (Ella ella eh eh)"
I'm sure we all remember listening to this song through our iPods (do they still sell those?) on the ride to school. Also, RiRi was always a badass.
2. Beyonce: "Irreplaceable"
"You must not know 'bout me / I can have another you by tomorrow / So don't you ever for a second get to thinking you're irreplaceable"
Nothing more girl-power than Queen B telling a cheating man to get off of her property, out of her house and get lost.
3. T-Pain: "Buy You A Drank (Shawty Snappin')"
"Baby girl, what's your name? / Let me talk to you, let me buy you a drank / I'm T-Pain, you know me"
Even though we were years from being able to actually buy a drink at the club, we jammed out to this song and snapped our fingers too.
4. Plain White T's: "Hey There Delilah"
"Hey there, Delilah / What's it like in New York City? / I'm a thousand miles away / But, girl, tonight you look so pretty / Yes, you do / Times Square can't shine as bright as you / I swear, it's true"
I, for one, was super jealous of this Delilah girl. Every girl dreams about a song being written about them. The Plain White T's nailed it with this one, and it's kind of a cult favorite now.
5. Flo Rida ft. T-Pain: "Low"
"Shawty had them Apple Bottom jeans, jeans / Boots with the fur, with the fur / The whole club was lookin’ at her / She hit the flo’, she hit the flo’ / Next thing you know / Shawty got low low low low, low low low low"
Admit it, you wanted Apple Bottom jeans and boots with the fur too. Thank whoever you had in your life that stopped you from making that decision.
6. Baby Bash ft. T-Pain: "Cyclone"
"She moves her body like a cyclone / And she makes me want to do it all night long / Going hard when they turn the spotlights on / Because she moves her body like a cyclone / Just like a cyclone"
This song was eventually banned from our middle school dances, but when it was allowed to be played, the gym turned into a club.
7. Alicia Keys: "No One"
"You and me together / Through the days and nights / I don't worry 'cause / Everything's going to be alright / People keep talking they can say what they like / But all I know is everything's going to be alright / No one, no one, no one / Can get in the way of what I'm feeling"
Alicia Keys is, was, and probably will always be, amazing. You pretended like you had someone to sing this song about. Me too.
8. Lil Wayne: "Lollipop"
"Shawty wanna thug / Bottles in the club"
Despite the obviously explicit theme of this song, we all found ourselves singing it. To be quite honest, this song remains on my playlist and I don't skip it when it comes on.
9. Jason Mraz: "I'm Yours"
"So I won't hesitate / No more, no more / It cannot wait / I'm sure / There's no need to complicate / Our time is short / This is our fate / I'm yours"
This was just the happy-go-lucky song we needed to calm our angsty teenage selves. And as adults, may we have the carefree outlook on life that Jason Mraz has.
10. J Holiday: "Suffocate"
"Cause I can't breathe when you talk to me / I can't breathe when you're touching me / I suffocate when you're away from me / So much love you take from me / I'm going outta my mind"
This is still one of my favorite songs of all time. Thank you, J Holiday.
11. Black Eyed Peas: "Boom Boom Pow"
"I like that boom boom pow / Them chicken jackin' my style / They try to copy my swagger / I'm on that next sh*t now / I'm so three thousand and eight / You so two thousand and late / I got that boom boom boom / That future boom boom boom / Let me get it now"
"I'm so three thousand and eight, you so two thousand and late." Those lyrics were everybody's Facebook status for a year. Good times. Also, everybody can rejoice! The Black Eyed Peas are rumored to be releasing an album. It's been far too long.
12. Taylor Swift: "You Belong With Me"
"But she wears short skirts / I wear T-shirts / She's cheer captain / And I'm on the bleachers / Dreaming about the day when you wake up / And find that what you're looking for has been here the whole time / If you can see I'm the one who understands you / Been here all along so why can't you see / You belong with me"
This song is so incredibly cliche that it kind of hurts, but it blew up and for good reason: more girls could relate to Taylor Swift than the cheer captain who had her man. Honestly, Taylor Swift's entire discography should probably be on this list, but we'd be here all day. Bottom line, you're still rocking, T.
13. Ke$ha: "Tik Tok"
"Don't stop, make it pop / DJ, blow my speakers up / Tonight, I'mma fight / 'Til we see the sunlight / TiK ToK, on the clock / But the party don't stop no / Whoa-oh oh oh"
Though the message isn't quite the best, you heard Ke$ha's breakthrough hit blaring through someone's iPod in the hallway on the walk to your locker.
14. Beyonce: "Single Ladies"
"Cause if you liked it, then you should have put a ring on it / If you liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it / Don't be mad once you see that he want it / 'Cause if you liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it / oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh x2"
Another one from Queen B on this list, but she had everyone doing the dance. And it was another empowering girl song! Who doesn't love those?
15. 3OH!3: "Don't Trust Me"
"Black dress with the tights underneath / I've got the breath of a last cigarette on my teeth / And she's an actress but she ain't got no need / She's got money from her parents in a trust fund back east"
Though it can be argued that this group came out with a couple of good songs, "Don't Trust Me" was definitely the most popular. It's not a classic, but it's fun.
There are literally hundreds of other songs that can be put on this list. We definitely had the best music experience growing up. And it's definitely heartbreaking that this generation won't know how profound of an impact Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" had on our lives.
