1. Ferrets
There are only 600 Black-Footed Ferrets in the world. 300 in the wild and 300 in captivity.
2. Penguins
The Galapagos Penguin is the most endangered penguin species with only about 10,000 penguins left.
3. Wolves
While many species of wolves are endangered, the Red Wolf species only has about 200 wolves left in captivity and 45 left in the wild.
4. Parrots
The Thick-Billed Parrot is the last parrot species to inhabit North America. There are approximately 500-2,000 parrots in the wild.
5. Wolverines
It is estimated that there are only 250-300 wolverines left.
6. Foxes
The San Joaquin Kit Fox is one of the most endangered animals in California with only around 7,000 left in the wild.
7. Sharks
Although the number of sharks cannot be counted, over 200 species of shark are listed on the Red List, with statuses ranging from critically endangered to near threatened.
8. Owls
The number of Northern Spotted Owls have decreased because of declining habitats. There are an estimated 1,260 owls left.
9. Gorillas
Many species of gorillas are endangered, but the Cross River Gorilla is the most endangered with only 300 gorillas left in the wild.
10. Bats
There are only about 250,000 Indiana Bats left in the world, and it is estimated that number will decline by 50% in the next 10 years.
11. Snakes
Four species of snake are classified as endangered and ten are classified as threatened.12. Birds
While several bird species are endangered, the Blue-Footed Booby is extremely endangered. There are only 6,000-8,000 birds still in the wild.
13. Dogs
The African Wild Dog is one of the most endangered mammals with fewer than 5,000 dogs remaining.
14. Pandas
The Giant Panda is now listed as vulnerable instead of endangered, but the Red Panda is still endangered. There are fewer than 10,000 Red Pandas in wild habitats and this number is estimated to continue to decline due to poaching and habitat loss.
15. Butterflies
Most people know that the Monarch Butterfly is endangered, but 21 species of butterfly are listed as endangered as well including the Callippe Silverspot, the Fender's Blue, and the Mitchell's Satyr.
