If you’re like me, some of you out there might think movies from the 50s to the 80s are actually better than most of the ones out today. It just seems to me a lot of movies nowadays are based on books or comics and the only ones based on original ideas are, well…less than extraordinary. So, if you’re one of the lucky few who don't go back to school until after Labor Day weekend and you’ve got a ton of free time on your hands, here are some awesome classics you should watch!
1. "The Breakfast Club"
This John Hughes classic features the adventures of five teenagers stuck in detention on a Saturday: “a brain, a basket case, an athlete, a princess, and a criminal.” Certainly a movie you’ll want to watch while you’re still in high school.
2. "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"
If you’ve ever seen someone wearing a shirt that says, “Save Ferris” or “Ferris Bueller, you’re my hero”, you can once again thank John Hughes for creating another iconic character.
3. "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
Probably one of the most iconic movies ever created this classic features the stunningly beautiful and insanely talented Audrey Hepburn. After you watch this, maybe take a trip down to the famous Tiffany’s jewelry store to see what all the fuss is about.
4. "Funny Face"
Looking for more Audrey Hepburn? Well, here’s another great one except this is a musical. Even better!
5. "Roman Holiday"
Here’s even more Hepburn! Can you tell yet that I’m a huge fan?
6. "How to Steal a Million"
Okay, this is the last Hepburn movie, I promise.
7. "Dirty Dancing"
This famous dancing classic features the amazing Patrick Swayze has the hot,
swaying heartthrob. Ever heard of the song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” or heard someone say “Nobody puts Baby in a corner”? Yup, that was the old Swayz Master!
8. "It's A Wonderful Life"
I know it’s a little too soon to be thinking about Christmas but this is certainly a film to remember when the snow starts falling and the Christmas tree is up. A great movie about love, family, and the difference one person can make in so many people’s lives
9. "White Christmas"
Again, another great Christmas movie to watch during the holiday season. And this one features the incredibly talented Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Vera-Ellen, and Rosemary Clooney.
10. "Sound of Music"
This is the classic Julie Andrew’s musical might be long (almost three hours), but it’s still an amazing display of Andrew’s talent. This is the film that won her the Golden Globe for Best Actress as well as an Academy Award for Best Picture.
11. "Jaws"
It’s not summer until you’ve watched this Steven Spielberg blockbuster hit. You’ll be hearing the infamous theme song every time you go for a swim in the ocean: da…dum…
12. "The Thing"
While you’re holed up inside during a snowstorm, this is definitely a great horror movie to spook yourself with.
13. "Grease"
The original high school musical featuring the handsome John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Tell me more!
14. "The Great Gatsby" (1974)
I know the gif above features Leonardo DiCaprio from the newest version but if you’re looking for the movie version closest to the book, Jay Clayton’s Gatsby is the one to watch. Some of the scenes featuring Gatsby’s mansion were filmed in Rhode Island by the famous Newport mansions: the Rosecliff and the Marble House.
15. "A League of Their Own"
This is certainly one of the most iconic feminist films ever made. It’s an amazing story about how women can do anything men can do and can bring their own flare to it. With actors and actresses like Geena Davis, Madonna, and Tom Hanks, you’re sure to have a ball!
