Being away at college has given me new found appreciation for having a dog as a pet. My dog is on the top of list of things I miss about home. I’m sure that goes for a lot of college kids. It makes your day when you see a dog on campus. You just want to go pet it and hug it. Dogs are probably the best animal to have ever roamed the earth (I apologize to all you cat people out there). But, I have 14 reasons to prove it.

1. They are loyal.

They are always there to greet you when you come home no matter how long you have been away. It’s always nice to have someone that’s excited that you’ve returned home.

2. They are quick to forgive.

They’ll never hold a grudge. No matter how angry you can be at your dog when you are ready to move on, so are they.

3. Always ready to play.

Whether it’s three o’clock in the morning or two o’clock in the afternoon, they are willing to play with you.

4. They’re trustworthy.

They are always someone to talk to. They are always ready to listen. You can tell them absolutely anything, and you know it won’t go anywhere else.

5. They are the best cuddle buddies.

More than any boyfriend/girlfriend ever could. They’ll keep you warm, too.

6. They protect you.

The moment there is a knock on the door or they see a bird on the front porch, they do their absolute best to protect you from any harm that may come across you.

7. They never judge.

You can do whatever you want in front of them because like a true friend, they don’t judge. So go ahead and eat that last tenth slice of pizza. They won’t care—well, maybe if you don’t share.

8. They appreciate your existence.

More than anything a dog just loves that you are around. That is why they follow you everywhere around the house and always willing to go in the car with you on trips.

9. They are always happy.

Dogs always have a smile on their face (unless you're giving them a bath).

10. And continuing with that…they always want to make you happy.

Dogs have the ability to turn any frown upside down. All they want in life is for you to be happy and they aren’t happy if you’re not happy.

11. They help you clean up your messes.

Any time that you drop some food on the floor, they are quick to help you pick it up before you even have the chance.

12. They improve your health.

Petting a dog has been known to lower blood pressure and relieve stress. This is why puppy therapy is popular among stressed out college students and people who have anxiety. They also have the ability to detect cancer with their keen sense of smell.

13. They are helpful.

Not only do they eat the food that you’ve dropped on the floor, but dogs can be trained to help impaired people stay mobile and more independent.

14. They have unconditional love for you.

Dogs will always love you no matter what.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
