14 Things You'll Only Understand If You Attended Young Harris College
Real Geeks

Young Harris College will forever have a special place in my heart, even though I no longer attend school there. After all, it isn't called the "enchanted valley" for nothing. I have so much love for this campus, the faculty, staff and students. There are certain things you only know if you attend or attended school there that nobody else will understand.

1. Clegging.

This is something everyone has to do before they graduate. Legend has it that the Clegg building is haunted. Apparently, if you go in to the building at night you hear someone playing the piano.

2. Red Roof.

We all loved getting those emails from President Cathy Cox about people complaining of us college kids going to red roof just to hang out and enjoy the amazing view.

3. Miss Julia.

May her sweet and beautiful soul rest in peace. She would greet us in the mornings with the biggest and most genuine smile on her face.

4. Cupid Falls.

Apparently, It's haunted too. It's also really calming and peaceful and just a short walk from campus.

5. Appleby.

Surprise, it's haunted too. Also, Trisha Yearwood lived there in the 80's.

6. Athletes and fine arts.

At least 75 percent of the campus are either athletes or involved with the fine arts in some way.

7. Walking to class.

Like most college students, everyone complains about having to walk across campus to class. YHC students are no different, except their walk across campus is, at maximum, seven minutes and it's because you live in the Village and have to go to the Art Annex across the street.

8. Thanksgiving dinner.

Probably the best food ARA has all year. The best part is that it gives you an excuse to dress up with friends and it's served to you by faculty and staff.

9. Work study.

Just about everyone has some sort of on campus job. Whether it be the gym, RCC, the dining hall, Student Development, Residence life or with a teacher or other staff member. And their favorite time of the month is getting those emails from Ms. Charlie Rogers that checks are ready.

10. Backpacks.

They have one meaning during the day and another meaning after sundown. If you are legitimately going to the library, you should have been there before sunset because all the study rooms are taken and you're probably going to get stuck with the foreign kids talking.

11. Greek life.

Greek life at YHC is something totally different than any other campus you could see. Gamma Psi, Phi Alpha Phi, Delta Phi Epsilon Sigma Beta Sigma, and Alpha Iota are the sororities that are currently on campus at YHC, (Let us never forget Phi Delta). Alpha Omega, Zeta Pi, Kappa Sigma, Chi Delta Phi, Alpha Xi, Phi Sigma Kappa, and Upsilon Delta Sigma are the fraternities that are currently on campus. There are Cheers every Wednesday night at 8 on the Plaza.

12. Parking.

Isn't as bad as we think it is, but for a campus with as few students as YHC, You'd think there would be more parking.

13. Susan B. Harris Chapel.

Another building so rich in history and, yet again, apparently haunted.

14. START orientation.

The only place where team building games and knee high socks go together.

This place gets in your heart and stays forever. No matter the reason you left, stayed or graduated, something about stepping onto campus fills your heart with so much joy. You can't shake the feeling. Whether you're there a semester or five years, your heart will forever be Mountain Lion Purple.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
