14 Things to Take Advantage of at Coastal Carolina University

  1. The First 54 - The “First 54” is a programming initiative that focuses on providing activities for all students for the first 54 days of the fall semester. Students can go to a variety of events that range from Greek life day parties, to rock climbing competitions at the gym. (Why 54 days? Coastal Carolina University was founded in 1954!)
  2. Expansion - “Coastal Carolina; Under construction since 1954”, is a running joke that’s often said. Although the construction can sometimes be an inconvenience, we can all agree that we appreciate it in the long run. CCU has added brand new residence halls, science buildings, and stadiums over the past few years and it’s absolutely gorgeous.
  3. Organization Kickoff (Formerly Club Recruitment Day) - This is by far one of the most fun days of the year. If you’re new to campus and you’re not exactly sure where you fit in, this day is specifically for you. Over 120 clubs and organizations gather and table out on Prince Lawn, all day long, in an attempt to inform and recruit new members. At Organization Kickoff, you can find a wide variety of organizations that may peak your interest; such as the Vice Versa Fashion Club, CINO Pantry , The Sea Turtle Club, and so much more.
  4. CINO Day - Imagine a state fair in the middle of your campus. Flame throwers, bouncy houses, exoctic animals, ziplines, carnival foods, and a host of other items. This event is provided to you by The Coastal Activities Board and is one of the most anticipated events of the year.
  5. Greek Life - Add a chapter to your life. Coastal’s fraternity and sorority life is rapidly growing with another chapter colonizing (seemingly) every other fall semester. If you’re looking to get involved with an organization that’s extremely focused on community service, brother/sisterhood, and academic achievement, look into joining a chapter.
  6. Sporting Events - The new Spring-Brooks Baseball stadium allows students to enjoy a scenic upper deck, boardwalk, and student section while cheering on a highly successful baseball team. The HTC Student Recreation and Convocation Center houses back to back Big South Championship teams for students to enjoy all year long. In the words of CCU Stallion, “Yay us! Boo them! Go Sports!”.
  7. The Lib-Jackson Student Union - This stunning building has so much to offer for students. You can enjoy an incredibly inexpensive movie, buy a quick snack from the Main Street P.O.D Market, host a meeting in one of the upstairs conference rooms, hang out with friends in the downstairs game room, or work on something for your organization in the Student Organization Resource Center.
  8. SCAF - Joining the Student Chanticleer Athletic Foundation will automatically award you 3,000 GoTeal Rewards points, membership t-shirt/decal, and exclusive discounts to restaurants/stores in the area. Funds raised through SCAF will support gameday experiences.
  9. The Farmer’s Market - If you’re still clinging on to your “healthier lifestyle” New Year’s Resolution, this is something you’d love. Vendors from the local community come out and sell fresh produce and handmade crafts to students for a fraction of the price of local grocery stores. If the price isn’t something that concerns you, the convenience is definitely a lovely aspect as well, as this is basically brought directly to your front door.
  10. Late Night Bingo - Another CAB event where students have the opportunity to win awesome prizes. Need new Beats headphones, a massive flat screen t.v, gaming systems, or apparel? This is the easiest and most fun way to win it. No strings attached. It’s too easy. I would 10/10 recommend attending this event at least once during your time at CCU.
  11. CINO Leadership Programs - The Office Of Student Life provides multiple leadership activities for students to take advantage of throughout the year. CINO Quest is a program that’s aimed at providing incoming freshman with a mentor and family to help guide them through their first year on campus. CINO Ignite is for sophomores that are interested in learning how to embrace their own leadership skills and understand their peers by analyzing things from different perspectives. CINO Legacy is for upperclassmen that want to leave their mark and it focuses on improving networking/basic life skills. Each program is highly encouraged and is an absolutely amazing opportunity that everyone should take advantage of while at Coastal.
  12. Campus Recreation - The rock wall, intramurals, HTC gym facilites, Williams-Brice gym, and outdoor centers are all great places to go if you want to stay in shape.
  13. Surf Turf - Come out, in the fall, and watch Coastal Carolina football play on this spectacular teal turf. This turf is one of only a few in the country to dawn the colors of it’s school and it’s one that you have to see in person to truly appreciate.
  14. Faculty/Staff - The faculty and staff at Coastal Carolina are just simply amazing. If you need extra help, most professors are willing to do everything in their power to help you. The staff in the dining halls greet everyone with a smile and do all they can to ensure that you have the best dining experience. The library workers are there for you, even during the most stressful finals weeks, with coloring books, Starbucks, Jenga puzzles, and many other stress relievers to help you relax and focus.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
