14 Things Sorority Girls Do That Are Actually Really Weird

Yes, there is the occasional naked girl running around with a towel on her head. No, we don't all have flirty pillow fights.

1. Throwing signs

Before I was a part of Greek life, I had no idea what to do with my hands in pictures. Do I give a solid thumbs up, keep my hands down to my side, or chuck up the peace sign? SO MANY OPTIONS. Well, once you go Greek, you never have to feel awkward in these photos again! Just throw what you know and you're gucci.

2. Speed dating

During recruitment week, you're given only a few short minutes each day to get to know all of these girls that could potentially be your new sisters. OH, and to top it off, you're walking to and from all of these houses in 90 degree weather, trying to keep your cool (haha punny), and your eyebrows on fleek, all while trying to make a great first impression. Good luck!!

3. Wearing matching clothes

There's just something about those Comfort Color pocket tees that scream "I'M IN A SORORITY!!!!!", and I'm okay with it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4. Living in a house with 60+ other girls

Yes, there is the occasional naked girl running around with a towel on her head. No, we don't all have flirty pillow fights. BUT, our closets do quadruple in size which is so awesome.

5. Squatting in every picture

We do this so often in pictures, that's it's been given the nickname "sorority squat." I still don't know why we do it, but it's always a go-to.

6. Putting our letters in everything

We put them on our clothes, laptops, blank canvases, and our Instagram bios. Seriously everything. Because everyone ever needs to know what chapter we're in!!

7. Secret handshakes and code words

All I can say is that these are indeed a thing, but no Greek member will tell you about them because, you know, it's a secret. ;)

8. Singing and chanting in unison

A group of women singing the same song in high pitched cheery voices to beckon you to join their chapter may seem creepy to an outsider, but...... okay I don't have an argument for this. It is a little creepy. Oops.

9. Wearing flower crowns

There's just something about wearing a crafted crown full of sunflowers and pink carnations (S/O TO MY GPHIB'S) that makes you feel like a princess and goes well with all of the adorable bid day shirts!

10. Calling girls our age 'mom' and 'grandma'

Don't get me wrong, getting a family within my greek family was super awesome. However, it does get confusing when I have to differentiate between my biological mom or my sorority mom that's just a year older than me.

11. Play dates with other chapters A.K.A socials

A few times a month, the social chair of your chapter will set up socials with other fraternities or sororities where you do a certain activity (carving pumpkins, karaoke, ice skating, etc.) and just socialize with each other to get to know other people in your greek community. They're actually really fun once you get past the first 5 awkward minutes of realizing you're basically on play dates with other chapters.

12. Snapping instead of clapping

The amount of times I agree with something in class and I start loudly snapping. Yes, I'm that girl.

13. Being serenaded by fraternity Men

Sitting on the laps of sweaty drunk boys slurring their words while trying to sing to you is quite the experience. However, there's the occasional chapters that will come fully sober, give out some roses while they sing, and be complete gentlemen and prove to you that chivalry is not dead!

14. And lastly, making videos promoting our sisterhood by laughing in slow-mo

These are sooooooo weird, yet we continue to do them. They're basically 5 minute long videos of a bunch of similarly dressed girls jumping up and down, throwing what they know, laughing, blowing bubbles, and throwing glitter in the air. Yep, that's about it. Being Greek is definitely a little weird to get used to at first, but it's totally worth all the weirdness.

Sorority

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
