The early 2000s, what a time to be alive. Being born in 1996, I'm barely a '90s kid, but I'm not a 2000s kid either. Despite not really having a designated name for my childhood, there are definitely some distinct staples from that time; here are just a few of my memories from the glorious elementary school days. (Disclaimer: some of these are more girl-oriented)
1. Tamogatchi
I think I actually became friends with my third grade best friend because of our Tamagotchi's, and we definitely got in a big fight when my Tamogatchi married someone else's. And I remember when I got my first Tamagotchi (a pink sparkly one), I sprinted over to my neighbor's house to show it to her.
2. Clogs/Platform flip flops
On the first day of second grade, I was wearing the same purple clogs as another girl in my class, and we instantly became best friends. I was so proud of those shoes, I felt like my mom, clicking around the hallways in them. And when it was too hot for clogs, I just entered the world of platform flip flops.
3. Bratz
All of my sleepovers in second grade consisted of playing Bratz until (drumroll please) 11 o'clock! When I got the Bratz video game for the game cube, I could not get enough. All of this was against my mom's wishes, for she hated them (which I now understand).
4. Ello
Ok, I honestly completely forgot about this until I was looking for other pictures to jog my memory about toys from the 2000s, but this toy was definitely one of my favorites. You could literally build so many things and people. I could play it for hours.
5. Nintendo DS
I still remember waking up Christmas morning and seeing my new white DS under the tree. Nintendogs became my obsession, and I had to carefully plan how to best use my DS for the hour I was allowed to use electronics per day.
6. Razor scooter
Am I the only one who whacked their Achilles heel or shins at least 5 times while getting on and off the scooter?
7. Cranium
Any Cranium games were my go-to board game as a kid, but we usually had to modify the rules though because we had accidentally left the Play-Doh out and it had dried up...
8. Pretty Pretty Princess
When I wasn't playing Cranium, my siblings and I (yes, even my brother -- sorry James) loved playing Pretty Pretty Princess. I was always purple, and I always won (I'd manipulate the game to make sure because I needed that crown). Sometimes my sister and I would just put on the jewelry for fun, too.
9. Game Cube
Oh, the days when you had to sit super close to the TV while playing video games so you didn't accidentally unplug the controller... I actually hated the Game Cube though because my brother and sister always played Super Smash Brothers without me because I wasn't good enough (they were younger than me...).
10. Super Soakers
I cannot even tell you how many Super Soaker themed birthday parties I went to when I was a kid. The best was when the party favor included a small Super Soaker. I think my siblings and I ended up with at least 10 different forms of Super Soakers, although most of them broke within the year.
11. Easy-Bake Oven
This was more my younger sister's thing than mine, but I still loved to spend my time baking one tiny cookie in a plastic plug-in oven. (And the recipes definitely didn't turn out like this picture)
12. Justice T-shirts
Or Limited Too, whatever floats your boat. But if you were a third-grade girl and didn't own a shirt that had a silly saying written in sparkly letters, were you really a third-grade girl? Better yet, maybe you owned a shirt with a built-in, short-sleeved cardigan, or a shirt that came with matching fingerless gloves (my mom wouldn't let me buy those, I still don't know why).
Yeah, that's me.
13. Avril Lavigne
I perpetually had the lyrics to "Sk8er Boi" and "Girlfriend" stuck in my head as a second grader, and I could probably sing them flawlessly even now.
14. Webkinz
Once Webkinz entered the picture, all of my allowances vanished because they were basically the only toy I played with. Coming up with a name for your new Webkinz in the Adoption Center with that penguin lady staring at you was some of the most pressure I'd felt in my nine years of life. I remember playing Polar Plunge for hours and mining for gems daily at the Curio Shop. Those were the days... (I went on it recently and it's still as slow as ever.)
