14 Things My Ballet Company Taught Me

14 people taught me about something more than ballet—they impacted my entire life.

14 Things My Ballet Company Taught Me
Ryan Hatch

This was my first year at college and my first year on BYU’s ballet company—BYU Theatre Ballet. 14 people met for the first time the week before the fall semester started with only a few returning from previous years. Together, we have been through hours of classes, millions of rehearsals and many incredible shows. Here are 14 things they taught me…

1. Just Keep On Going

There will be days when you want to throw in the towel and completely give up. Don’t ever let those moments make you forget what is truly important.

2. True Friends Push You

True friends and there to support you and help you. They are also there to make you a better person. Take time to learn from them.

3. Embrace Who You Are

Never let yourself shrink—love who you are and share the light you hold.

4. Laughter = Best Medicine

To the people who made me laugh every single day through classes, rehearsals, performances and everything else in between, thank you. You always brightened my day and helped me smile.

5. Take Time To Have Fun

It is so easy to overwork yourself and forget to enjoy life. Give yourself a break when you can and do things that help you stay grounded and happy.

6. Remember To Go With The Flow

The waves will get rocky, but remember to go with it and that you will make it to safety.

7. Kindness Is Powerful

You never know the impact one act of kindness will have. Always walk with a kind and loving heart.

8. Different Is Beautiful

Our differences are not meant to divide us, but rather they bring us together as we learn to love the unique qualities in everyone.

9. People Will Surprise You

Everyone is full of abilities and talents that are beneath the surface. Never forget to look for them.

10. Always Follow Your Passion

You do what you do for a reason. Don’t let your burning passion for what you love die, and keep that desire going.

11. People Are In Our Lives For A Reason

To say that this group of people coming together was a random thing is completely wrong. Everyone has a special role in the ballets of our lives.

12. Teachers Are Amazing People

They are the most selfless people to walk the earth. They are there to help you recognize your weaknesses, grow your strengths and remind you of how incredible you are.

13. With Faith, All Things Are Possible

14. God Knows You, Perfectly

I wasn’t expecting to make a ton of friends my first year in college. But God has an incredible way of surprising you. I was blessed with 14 incredible best friends and I know that the special connection we share will last for years to come. Each of them has impacted my life is a way more than 500 words can describe, and I am thankful every day for their roles in my life.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
