Being a member of the track and field team is one of the greatest decisions I have ever made, but also one of the worst! There are so many great benefits one can get from joining the track team, but throughout the seasons, many problems start to develop. But in the end, that's all part of the sport!
1. The question that every track runner will get from their friends at some point: "Why do you run track?"
We don't even know the answer to this most of the time.
2. When you hear the coach say, "there are spots open on the 4x400."
3. Practice is NEVER canceled.
4. When you hear the coach say "continuous" or "tempo" on a workout day.
5. The terrible muscle pain after the first week of practice, also known as "Hell Week."
6. Not having an indoor track during the indoor season.
Running outside when it's 18 degrees is horrible experience, you can't breathe and feel frostbitten on any exposed skin.
7. That one coach who takes track WAY too seriously.
Of course it's always good to be pushed to your limits and sometimes beyond your limits, but when you're on the ground completely out of breath and are vomiting, it would be nice to hear "take a break" instead of "GET YOUR A** OFF THE GROUND AND FINISH THE WORKOUT."
8. That feeling when you receive the baton in your relay and you're the head of the pack.
9. Forgetting sunscreen on those all day Saturday meets.
10. Walking on asphalt with your spikes still on.
11. Always having football players ask you "What's your 40 yard time?"
Track is an international sport, we don't use the American Measuring System, we use meters. And we don't run 40 for a dash, we run 55 or 60 meters in indoor track and the 100 meter in outdoor. Get with the program.
12. When you try to get someone to get a decent picture of you competing and then you see your track face.
13. The sports practicing on the infield have almost killed you dozens of times.
14. Seeing people of other sports flopped down on the high jump and pole vault mats.
Even with all the struggles you face in track, you love it and there's nothing you'd rather do.
