This past week, I had the opportunity to catch Jon Bellion live while he was in town. As the show continued on, I sat back and let the lyrics sink into my head as he belted them out. It made me realize that his message is powerful and the way he's using his fame and fortune is remarkable. Here are a few tunes that deserve some well-earned recognition.
14. Munny Right
"Cause my heart is in the future and I know where I belong".
Fear of the future is what this song touches on. Whether it's taxes or paying bills, there's a lot of responsibility that comes along with growing up. As we get older, trepidation of our success is what normally grabs ahold of our attention.
13. Guillotine
"There's bones in my closet, but you hang stuff anyway".
A.k.a. the song that screams "yeet" an ungodly amount of times.
12. Dead Man Walking
"There's paperwork to fill out, cause a dead man walks the streets".
This song never officially made an album, but is hilarious nonetheless. Bellion sings about the one time he hooked up with his sister's best friend, and decided to break the news to her through a song.
11. Woodstock
"Come look into the music and you won't feel pain".
This kind of pokes at and makes fun of big festivals such as Lollapalooza and Coachella. He explains what one would experience at a show like this and the (terrible) decisions people make in the heat of the moment.
10. Jungle
"Listen close, these models don't mean soda when they're offering coke".
This tune gives me high hopes of New York and what it's like living in the big apple.
9. Pre-Occupied
"I figured out there's money in my mind, I'm glad I lived my life pre-occupied".
Distractions, distractions, distractions. Life is full of them. Bellion sings about how he wants to be busy, but also just wants to make sure he's spending most of his time doing what he loves.
7. Maybe IDK
"I guess if I never fell, I wouldn't need grace".
This song represent calling out the faults in yourself. Once you confess your flaws, there's much more vulnerability and substance that you're willing to expose.
6. Overwhelming
"There is an ocean in your hips, so deep, I dive".
Another one of his fun songs. His witty lyrics really set the tone of this track, making pop culture references that most of his fans understand.
5. Hand Of God
"When you're lost in the universe, lost in the universe, don't lose faith".
This song is interesting because it's a mashup of every one of his tracks from The Human Condition album. He sticks to his religious roots as he closes out the album with this masterpiece.
4. Human
"The pastor tells me I've been saved I'm fine, then please explain to me why my chest still hurts".
This record once again calls out the faults in ourselves. He reveals his deepest fears and worries, holding nothing back.
3. Luxury
"Please don't let my soul drown in luxury".
This song talks about being distracted by false idols. As Jon Bellion becomes more famous, he's realizing too that with fame comes responsibility. As an artist, I respect him for his devotion for the music he produces and staying loyal to his fans.
2. Morning In America
"I've been trying to keep up with all these great expectations".
Although it may not be number one on the list, this song is remarkable because of its lyrics and allusions. He perfectly describes the true life of a young adult trying to find their way. From problems at home to problems at school, Bellion confesses his real life struggles, exposing himself through his music.
1. Run Wild
"Tight jeans, warm thighs, but your soul is frigid, but that's what happens when you make someone your true religion."
Still my favorite song to this very day. Although hinting at some sacreligious references, Bellion is once again honest in his lyrics as he talks about relationships and the divinity behind them.
