Shoreham. Wading River. Although these are actually two separate towns, we often refer to them as one.
They are ultimately two parts of the same whole. Shoreham and Wading River are two small towns on eastern Long Island that us residents call "our own little corner of the world." If you were lucky enough to grow up here, chances are your parents did too an maybe even your grandparents. Everyone claims that they can't wait to leave but everybody always comes back. After you go through (what used to be) Briarcliffe, Wading River Elementary or Miller Ave,and Albert G. Prodell, you end up at Shoreham-Wading River High School (SWRHS).
Here are a list of things you know to be true if you had the privilege of attending SWRHS:
1. Coffee House is one of the most fun days of the year.
Always the day before Christmas break, coffee house is always something to look forward to. Classes are cut short for the day and you get to spend the rest of the day in the auditorium watching people preform things from singing to things you can't even really explain.
2. You've said "hoox".
Do I even need to explain this one? If you attended SWRHS, you already know what this stupid phrase means and you've probably used it in a sentence more times than you're proud of. Also, Rocky Point, Miller Place, Mount Sinai, don't even try to take credit for this one. "Hoox" originated in Shoreham and that's the end of that.
3. You've heard some crazy stories from Rich.
Rest In Peace to one of the best guys to ever walk through the SWRHS doors. If you went to SWRHS, you know exactly who Rich Cambria is and chances are you've had some pretty interesting conversations with him. He always had the best stories (I'm sure you know he was there when Tupac was shot) and gave awesome advice. It was always worth skipping a class to hangout in the halls with this guy.
4. Mrs. Mitchell's room was a great hangout spot.
Once you take Health with Mrs.Mitchell in 10th grade, there's really no going back. From then on, its impossible not to want to spend your spare time in between class or free periods in her room. And if you're like me, you probably did the envelope activity more than once.
5. Sills?
Who couldn't resist a good beach party in the pitch black and freezing cold? Honestly, there was nothing better to do so Sills was the go to...until the cops came at least.
6. Two words... the loop.
7. Carnival Cookies.
"Someone please give me $1 there's hot carnival cookies and I ran out of money"
8. Island Estates on Halloween.
A beloved tradition for as long as I can remember. Standing in the middle of the Island Estates neighborhood on Halloween night until the cops came. Sorry for all the young ones who probably won't get to have this experience any more.
9. Deb either loved or hated you, no in between.
10. Nacho Wednesday.
Nachos or "chips and cheese" always made Wednesdays a little better.
11. You've sketchily hung out at D Block.
12. You've waited to see a fight in B wing.
13. Challenge Day was actually really cool.
Whether you wanted to go or not, Challenge Day was actually a really cool experience. What happens there stays there and at the time it was like your grade had its own secret since you couldn't tell anyone what went on.
