11 Signs That Say, "You Should Go Greek"

With recruitment season coming up at many universities, the thought of whether or not to go greek may have crossed your mind. There is a lot of negativity in the media towards greek life, and that may scare people away. However, I am writing to tell you not to listen to the media. I have created a list of 11 positive reasons to go greek to combat the negativity. If you agree with any of these statements, going greek may be for you.

1. You want to meet new people

From the moment the recruitment process starts, you are constantly meeting new people. From meeting your recruitment group to meeting everyone in greek life throughout recruitment week, you will meet many new faces.

2. You want to break out of your comfort zone

Going greek is an easy way to break out of your comfort zone in a positive way. The amount of people you will meet along the way, along with throwing yourself out there to try something new, is a huge step to take. It might be hard, but it will feel great to break out of that shell of yours.

3. You want to create the best version of yourself

Deciding to go greek is the first step to becoming a better version of yourself. Although sometimes the media may say otherwise, there are many positive qualities that you will gain by joining greek life.

4. You want an opportunity to give back

Greek life places an emphasis on service. Each organization has a philanthropy that is unique and special to them. By going greek, not only do you get to help out the community and support a larger cause, but you get the benefit of joining an organization as well.

5. You want to find motivation to do better in your classes

Depending on the organization or university as a whole, there may be certain GPA requirements. These requirements keep you motivated to do your best in your classes.

6. You want to feel a sense of belonging

This is a huge sign that greek life may be for you. Joining greek life is unlike joining another organization. There is a special bond that comes with greek life that is hard to explain, and it gives you that sense of belonging you are looking for.

7. You want to leave a positive mark on your resume

Although this is definitely not the only reason you should join greek life, it is true. Being able to add what greek organization you are a part of, along with any leadership roles or volunteer experience you have had, is a great resume builder.

8.You want to become involved in leadership roles

Joining greek life is one of the easiest ways to start getting involved with leadership roles. In fact, the act of joining greek life alone is a great first step. There are many opportunities for leadership, both inside and out of greek life, that will be presented to you.

9. You want to gradually make life long friends

The cliché of finding life long friends in greek life could not be more true. It may not happen the first few weeks of joining or even within the first few months. However, when you least expect it, you will look around and realize the life long friends you have made.

10. You want to have a never ending support system by your side

It is hard to feel down when you have 50-plus friends by your side.

11. You are looking for the "whole package" out of your college experience

The best part about joining greek life, and the main reason I personally wanted to join, is that many different factors come with it. By joining one single organization, you now have the opportunity to become involved with service, leadership and your university as a whole. It is all of the experiences I was looking to get out of college in one. This is what made going greek one of the best decisions I have made.
