Our generation puts so much pressure on ourselves.
Whether it is something that is expected of our hovering parents, or something our professors just won't let slide, we have millions of tasks running through our mind. What's amazing is that we are still capable to set goals for ourselves in the future.
But sometimes our goals don't keep what is best for us on the forefront of the mind. Now might be a good time to sit back and update those goals you set for yourself in a time capsule your senior year of (your glory days) high school. So without further ado, life goals, revised.
1. Get married before 30 when you're really ready.
Why set yourself up with a deadline that you don't really have to make? Haven't you ever heard of thirty, flirty and thriving? Nothing more attractive than being an established thirty-year-old who's ready to settle down and share life with someone they're really ready to share it with. Before you're ready, you're almost guaranteed to have some wedding crashers.
2. Retire with $5 million millions of precious memories
Ever heard of the phrase, "A million dollar check says a thousand words"? Yeah, neither have I. So spend that extra dollar that you were saving in your bank account to make a memory with your friends.
3. Have the most followers supporters.
Who cares about your social media, when it only represents the best 10% of yourself? Who are your supporters who are there for you for the mistakes, quirky moments and bloopers that don't get shown on social media?
4. Fall in love with a beautiful personinner beauty.
Ever notice how people become more attractive the more that you spend time with them? These are the people that have true inner beauty. Don't let these people pass you by, because they aren't plastered on the covers of magazines, they're much harder to come by.
5. Become an entrepreneurinfluencer.
Make a change in your community. Become involved with something that you are passionate about. You'd be surprised how many people look up to you. Outreach programs like Big Brother/Big Sister and College Mentors for Kids are great places to start.
6. Build my own homedreams.
If one of your dreams is to build a home, then go for it. But for the rest of us who missed out on those Building and Construction Management classes, focus in on those dreams. And use your own hammer and nail to build them. Because a dream of your own is one that it worth fighting for. Trust me, it will taste that much sweeter when you accomplish it. Just keep dreaming like Anna.
7. Travel the world with that special someonealone.
Ever had a friend vacation study abroad? I'm sure they mentioned a lot about finding out more about themselves. So take on the world by yourself, and maybe share it with that special someone later. How would you know that you will love exploring the world with somebody else before you explore it yourself? Maybe you might even find your own Jack Dawson or Rose Dewitt on your adventure.
8. PhotographCapture every moment.
Mentally. Take more mental photographs. Your memory will thank you when you're sitting in your retirement home and you can still recall moments with your loved ones. Think about the smile that you will put on the faces of your grandchildren after they ask you to tell them a story about your college years instead of showing them pictures that probably should have been deleted immediately after they were captured.
9. Donate money toServe others.
Find joy in the action of service. There is no receipt. You can't get a tax write-off. But you will feel full of joy and love. What's better is that the people that you serve will feel the same way.
10. Make a lot of valuable friendships.
For those of you who took statistics during your freshman year (or your junior year, like me), we're talking quality over quantity. Search for the friends that are always there for you, rather than the number of friends you can invite to a party via Facebook invites. As dramatic as girls make it, you really want to find the people you want to support you at your wedding. Or that will call you Ohana.
11. Find someone whom you can live withcan't live without.
This makes sense, right? Have you ever felt the pain of wanting someone that you can't have? Has your heart ever ached for the one that got away? Don't let that happen, because we all deserve to find the person that we can't live without.
12. Make my parents proud of my jobhappiness.
Say it loud and clear to those helicopter parents who set you up for job interview after job interview. For the tenth time, dad, I'm not an accountant, and I don't want to work for your fraternity brother. Share with them how your career path brings you joy and you feel happy when you grow in your career.
13. Find happiness in luxuryordinary.
"It's the simple things." "I care about the little things." "That is extraordinary." You never see an unhappy person saying these things. So they must be on to something. Finding a new path to walk on can really bring you joy and new perspective. You didn't have to do anything luxurious or expensive to find it, but it will definitely bring you happiness.
14. Fight just to make upto make a stand.
Our generation has the challenge to make change in our world. We are being hired to make changes in companies. We are asked to fight norms. We are encouraged to take the path less traveled by. So while you're at it, make a stand and make a difference.
I know we're all struggling to get along during these difficult years, and we often feel unprepared for the pressures of the future. Take a second to reevaluate your goals and to take care of yourself. Remember that you are enough!
But what do I know, I'm just a twenty-something-year-old.
