The town of Holbrook is located in Suffolk County, Long Island. It's a decent sized town with a rough population of about 30,000 people. The positive is that it's about a 15 minute drive at most to get to a train station or airport. I've lived in Holbrook all my life, and I always enjoyed the local mom and pop businesses and was greatful of how much my town had to offer. My friends that live in Holbrook agree that there is no better pizza then the pizza we can find in our own backyard (as most Long Islanders anywhere would agree). There are a few things about Holbrook that I think sets it a part from other towns on Long Island and what make living in Holbrook so great.
1. The Holbrook Commons
"Where do you live?" "Holbrook." "Oh, that's near the commons!" Why yes, yes it is. It's almost like a landmark. When my friends and I were younger, we'd ride our bikes to the commons for Carvel or a slushy from the Deli.
2. Construction on the bridge
God, this is probably the worst. The construction on the bridge of Patchogue-Holbrook road that never seems to end. It's like they've been fixing it for decades, backing up traffic in the worst way.
3. Holbrook Country Club
The country club has baseball fields and a playground (just to name a few..) and it is completely free to use whenever! My friends and I frequently play tennis at the tennis courts when we've decided we're too broke to do anything else.
4. Sachem
If you live in Holbrook, you attend Sachem school district. But because of the weird cut-off's, some people of Holbrook attend Sachem North, while the other half attends Sachem East.
5. Sun Vet Mall
This place has gone downhill over the years, but they do have a few interesting stores still, A.C. Moore being my favorite.
6. Villa Lombardi's
The catering hall is beautiful. I've been there for many events during every season and there is nothing bad-looking or under-done ever. From weddings, to dances, to sweet 16's and even awards ceremonies, their venue is always done up perfectly to fit the season and the event. The place is very clean and their staff is very friendly.
7. Mamma Lombardi's
The restaurant is very well known around Holbrook. The inside of the restaurant is very nice and their red sauce is delishious.
8. Lombardi's Market
The market has some really interesting and fresh ingredients for a home-cooked meal, their bakery has some of the best cakes I've ever tasted, they have freshly made sandwiches and a wide assortment of cheeses. Their prices are fair and their inventory is always fresh and fully stocked.
9. Holbrook Diner
Like most town's on Long Island, there is a local diner. Their menu is fairly priced, their food is really good and the inside is very clean. I enjoy their breakfast above most diners.
10. Somerset
Known for having some of the nicest (and biggest) houses in Holbrook. If you want to see some beautitfuly decorated houses during Christmas time, drive through this neighborhood.
11. The water spiting rooster
I'm not even completely sure of what this place sells exactly, but my safe assumption would be fresh chicken eggs. Regardless, my friends and I enjoy driving past this place, just to see if the rooster out front is spitting water.
12. Mamma's
One of three locations. Mamma's (not affiliated with the Lombardi's) is my favorite local Italian restaurant. They cater and are part restaurant, part pizzeria. They have a price fixed menu for pasta night's and have the best garlic knot pizza (for those of you that have never tried this, I suggest doing so). Their staff is very kind and the owner is very personable.
13. Irish Times Pub
A very popular place on the weekends. They have both a restaurant and bar area and food you'll never be disappointed with. Everything is reasonably priced and it is perfect for the adult-night-out, or celebrating your twenty-first birthday.
