13 Traditions To Pick Up Over The Holidays

As the holiday season progresses, most college students are happy to be spending much needed time with family and friends. Many people participate in traditions during the holidays, and if you don't have a tradition yet, here are 13 new ones to pick up over the holidays.

1. Friendsgiving

If you haven't heard this term before, it refers to a Thanksgiving dinner thrown by friends. Everybody brings one dish and enjoys the collection of food, drink, and friendship.

2. Volunteering

The holiday spirit is all about giving and receiving. If you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving meal with your family, make a difference and volunteer your time to ensure another person can enjoy it too.

3.Outdoor game

As college students, we don't often find the time to just go outside and play around. This holiday season, get outside with your friends or family and play a game, whether it be football, soccer, or frisbee.

4. Surprise your family

We often don't realize how much our family members miss us while we're gone. Surprising your little cousin by picking him/her up from school could be a great new tradition.

5. Make eggnogg

Eggnogg is the drink of the holiday season. Most people buy it from the grocery store, but it's actually pretty easy to make at home. Making a batch of alcoholic eggnogg with your friends could be a great seasonal tradition to start.

6. See a movie

This is a family favorite of mine. There's nothing like eating a big Thanksgiving brunch and then going to see a movie with your family/friends.

7. Keep a journal

Keeping a journal has always been hard for me, but I'd imagine it would be really cool to be able to look at past Thanksgivings and remember funny stories.

8. Go ice skating

I never really understood why people love going ice-skating when it's freezing out, but watching your friends and family fall on ice is pretty entertaining.

9. Read a book

This may sound crazy, but during the school year, college students never have enough time to read for leisure, and reading is really useful for relaxing.

10. Leftovers for brunch

Thanksgiving leftover turkey sandwiches...yum.

11. Christmas countdown with your roommates

If you're spending Christmas away from home this year, a Christmas countdown is a fun tradition to start with your roommates.

12. Make ornaments

This could be something fun to do with friends, family, or your significant other. If you recently got a pet, now would be a great time to start a pawprint ornament tradition.

13. Gift swap/Secret Santa

You can put your own take on this, be it a girls tradition, gift swap at work, or naughty Secret Santa.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
