13 Things You Know If You've Lived In Michigan

How about that weather, huh?

1. Noticing our roads in movies

When you watch a movie and you happen to catch a glimpse of the street, you can easily tell it's Michigan. Everyone knows our streets are horrible and you might even see an entire street of tar.

2. Driving in the climate

Confronted with continuous days of snow, you learn how to drive in it pretty easily. Driving 65 mph on the freeway with three feet of snow becomes a habit. Once you go to another state where it barely snows, you can see how much people are truly scared of snow.

3. Hating Ohio State

No matter who you root for or if you don't like football or sports, you are literally born out of the womb hating Ohio State. We're always fighting with someone from another state that likes Ohio State.

4. Being a Michigan or Michigan State fan

Even if you root for another team, it is common that everyone either owns Michigan or Michigan State apparel. Along with that, in a game with an unknown team and a Michigan team, you cheer your hardest for Michigan regardless of whom you like.

5. Winter time.

Living in Michigan, you realize that winter is really just all four seasons put into one. One day it might be 23 degrees outside, then 60 degrees, and the next it rains, snows, and hails all in one day.

6. Going Up North

You know you live in the lower peninsula when every summer or winter, you go up north to your cabin near a lake or go snowboarding near Michigan's Adventure.

7. Knowing certain people

No matter who you are, you most likely know or have known someone that has worked in the auto industry. How many big car companies do we have here again? That many.

8. Autumn

Driving or walking around during fall time can be the most beautiful thing ever. It's so nice to see all the shades of red, yellow, and orange leaves. Plus it makes for pretty amazing photos.

9. Shorts in the winter

No matter what time of the year it is or whether it is -5 degrees to 80 degrees, you will always see someone in a pair of shorts, even if they have a sweatshirt on as well.

10. Common Vacations

Going on vacations either implies going up north, to Cedar Point, or to Florida. Good chances are, you've done all three, maybe all in one year.

11. State Spirit

Looking at the Lions, its either going to be a hard loss or amazing win, regardless of how they did in previous years, it's always necessary to cheer them on. I mean, who hasn't seen the Thanksgiving game each year?

12. Holidays in Michigan

Especially during Halloween as a child, you always had to wear a coat under or over your Halloween costume because of how cold it is. A lot of the time, your parents end up driving you around instead of you walking because it's either, snowing, raining, or -500 degrees outside.

13. Loving this Ice cream

Growing up as a child or maybe even as an adult, you loved Superman ice cream. Who can resist layers of blue, yellow, and red of ice cream? My mouth is watering already.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
