13 Things To Do This Summer On Long Island

Whenever someone asks me where I'm from, I always hesitate before saying "Long Island" because the normal response is either "Nassau or Suffolk?" or "Oh, you're from lawn-guy-land." Although many people have their doubts about it, because they either never been, or they're just mad they didn't get a chance to grow up there. Either way you see it, there are several things to do, especially in the summer. Although I don't know Suffolk County that well, being from Nassau definitely has it's perks. Here are just some of the MANY things to do this summer.

1. Beach

- You're surrounded by them, pick one and go. Personally my favorite beach is Pt. Lookout, while others prefer Jones. Either way, you'll be sure to see someone you know and a beautiful view.

2. Long Beach Boardwalk

- Grab your rollerblades, running shoes, bike, and friends. Although you probably shouldn't go on an 80 degree day; it's best to go at night and enjoy the beachy air.

3. Bayville

- Get dinner on the water and watch the sunset, maybe even go play mini golf.

4. Ralph's

- Don't even dare say you don't like or you've never been. There is at least one in every town you drive through.

5. Marvel

- 100% the best ice cream you will ever have, and it's pretty hard not to stop there after the beach for the car ride home.

6. Boardy Barn

- Although I've yet to go, it's the place to be when you're 21.

7. The Hamptons

- No matter where you go in the Hamptons, you won't be disappointed. Whether you're at someone's summer home, or eating at Margarita Grille, it's gorgeous.

8. Freeport

- The "Nauty Mile" is the place to go, either during the day or at night, it's always a good time, with amazing views.

9. Greenport

- If you've had a good childhood, than you can say that you've been to Greenport and rode the carousel to get the gold/silver rings or visited the candy shop with the red buckets.

10. Jamesport/Mattituck

- Rent a home for the summer, or even two weeks like my family did, and have the time of your life. A vacation that wasn't as nice as Mexico, but with memories that'll last you a lifetime.

11. Belmont race track

- You can go at any age, and it's still fun. Obviously the older the better, cause you actually know what's going on and can enjoy a beer.

12. Nikon Theater at Jones Beach

- A concert at Jones Beach is something to experience at least once in your life. Anyone you see will be sure to create a good time.

13. SplishSplash

- As a kid, this was the best place to go. As you get older, not so much, because who wants to run around barefoot in their bathing suit all day?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
