Athletic training is my world and I wouldn't change my major for anything. It can be the most rewarding thing to experience but it takes a special person to deal with the crazy.
1. When you get khakis and tennis shoes for Christmas......... and that excites you.
These are a huge part of your every day outfit and it's great when family understands and supports that need/obsession.
2. Some people think you're a personal trainer.
The first question they ask is "So you teach people how to work out in the gym and stuff?" Let's be honest: it's easier to just say yes and move on.
3. When your friends and family come to you with any and all injuries.
Yes, I know what's wrong with you. No I cant magically fix it. But yes, I can refer you somewhere else.
4. Your automatic response is "Put some ice on it."
RICE is everything and the go-to for acute injuries. It's going to be cold but that's the reason it helps!
5. If you make a perfect ice bag... Yes, it is an art.
It not only has to be made in 2.5 seconds because there's a line of athletes out the door waiting for their bags, but it has to last the 20 minutes they need it.
6. If you've "moved" a national holiday because Friday night football was more important.
October 32 was the best Halloween we've ever had and we wouldn't trade that day for anything.
7. You feel like a proud mom or dad seeing your athlete return to play.
This is what it's all about: going through the good times and the not so good times so your athlete can play again at the level they were before.
8. When the same 10 or less people are in all your classes, every year... and that's OK.
These people become your family and you act like family in every way, from fighting and bickering to being there for each other in tough times.
9. When you're the one not panicking in a crisis.
You have to be able to keep a level head in a crisis. The breakdown comes when everything's been taken care of and not a second before.
10. If you've ever used the pick up line, "I'd tape that."
We have a special sense of humor. You know its true.
11. If you get excited when everyone shares injury pictures.
From the latest x-rays to the dislocated pinky, we want to see it all.
12. When you see the training room more than you see your bed.
You live and breath athletic training. That's how you know you found your place. We all love sleep but we love our profession even more.
13. When life throws you a curve ball, you drop a shoulder, make sure they aren't FTD, and when in doubt ship them out.
It is important to be flexible and get things done no matter what obstacles are thrown your way. Make sure that if a life is in danger on your watch, you save it, and if they need help from someone other than you, make sure they get there.
I know I have found my place in athletic training as have many people I know. It's hard work but, it is more than worth it. I love my AT family!
