13 Things Pitt Students Miss While Home For Summer

Half of these are food.

The theory is that if you've been home for more than a week and you don't already miss your school, then you didn't choose the right school? However, with a school like the University of Pittsburgh, students were missing their home within a matter of hours and for plenty good reasons. These are just a few.

1. Sorrento's/Antoon's Pizza

Six dollar pizza. Regardless of your favorite pizza place on campus, the $6 pizza was a dream and open past midnight. Now, pizza is at least $10, far away and not open at "unreasonable hours."

2. Being able to walk almost anywhere you need to be

Listen, Chipotle is less than a 10-minute walk from the Cathedral of Learning (AKA Cathy). Now at home, Chipotle is a 10-minute drive, and parking is a mess. Pizza was a few blocks away. CVS and Rite-Aid were just around the corner. Now, everything is few mile walk or a car ride, which actually sucks.

3. Seeing Cathy every day

Cathy is beautiful, wonderful and a borderline goddess. Seeing Cathy in her prime (basically every day), could make any Pitt student smile. Plus, taking pictures and putting Cathy in your snap story can make all your other friends jealous.

4. Being within a few minutes from all your friends, regardless of where they were from

Having your friends across the hall, in your dorm building, in your actual dorm or in a house 10 minutes from campus is everyone's dream. However, once summer starts, the friends who were only minutes from you, are now hours away from you, and you miss them, but getting together is about 100x harder than it was while at Pitt.

5. Market/The Perch

Yes, this is surprising. But think about how easy it was to swipe into market or the perch and eat something. Now, you have to make your own food or actually have to go pay for real food with the money you don't have. Not to mention, soft serve (when it is working).

6. Free transportation

Getting bored is very easy when you're home. However, getting bored in Pittsburgh was almost nearly impossible due to the fact that Pitt students have free bus fair and have a plethora of areas to explore.

7. South Oakland

South Oakland is a wonderful land full "trashy" houses during the daytime and drunk students during the night time. Partying with friends in South Oakland can be considered one of Pitt student's favorite pass times.

8. Dining Dollars

Let's take Ben and Jerry's for example. A normal pint of Ben and Jerry's is about $4-$5, and that's real money. To be honest, I don't know how much a pint of Ben and Jerry's is at the Market, but it didn't really matter because I had dining dollars to spend and ice cream on my mind.

9. Towers Lobby

Towers lobby was always busy and full of either drunk people or stressed students in line at the Starbucks in the lobby. People watching in Towers Lobby was always good, free entertainment for drunks and sober people alike.

10. Chicken on a Stick

Located on Semple Street (right before the ward turn off), Chicken on a Stick is grilled chicken with "yum yum" sauce that makes the chicken the best late night weekend snack.

11. Dave and Andy's

Just the smell of Dave and Andy's could get anyone's mouth watering. The best ice cream in Oakland was located so conveniently and was so good that I wasn't even angry that they only took cash or that sometimes I had to wait outside because the line was too long.

12. The O

Between the mountains of fries that will surprise any first time "O fries" buyer and the delicious hot dogs, the O's greasy food remains a favorite of Pitt students.

13. Laying out on Cathy Lawn/Soldiers and Sailors Lawn/Schenley Park

On any beautiful day in Oakland, Pitt students can be spotted catching some rays or catching up on homework. The availability of green space is never short and sunny days are always cherished.

In other words, Oakland, we all miss you and can't wait to be back in August, even though we've only been home for a short period of time.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
