As a child, there was one thing I wished for... a normal name. And when I say normal, I mean something like Sarah or Emily. Don't get me wrong I love my name. But there are times where I have to ask myself, why did my parents give me this name. I go by a nickname, but sometimes I'm not able to go by that nickname. I love my name and all its uniqueness but correcting people gets old after awhile. Growing up with a name like "Bridgaline"-- bridge-a-lean, was not easy. If I try to google the name, I am the only person that comes up, so I wonder am I the only Bridgaline in the world? Here are some "issues" anyone with a unique name will understand.
1. The first day of school/classes corrections.
Sitting in class waiting for the teacher to pause on the attentence list. You know when they pause. It is your name. And you try to stop them from butchering it but there is no way you will stop it. And substitutes are even worse.
2. Going to the doctors office and waiting for your name or a version of your name to be called.
You have to wait and listen carefully because you never know what the nurse is going to say. You might even have to ask: "did you mean...?" You can never sit there and relax, reading what ever magazine is out.
3. Hearing "that's different" from almost everyone you accouter.
When you meet someone new, it's never "nice to meet you!" You get "that's different" instead. Apparently, it's not nice to meet anyone who doesn't have a unique name.
4. One word: Starbucks
Starbucks is known for messing up people's names. You are better off using a fake name than giving your real name.
5. Trying to find a souvenir with your name on it is unknown, unless you get it custom made.
Sarah, Ben, Brittney, James... Only the "normal" names.
6. Microsoft Word does not recognize your name.
Seeing the red line under your name is annoying as anything. Even if you add your name to the Microsoft dictionary. Chances are you will still see that line under your name.
7. Your phone continuously auto-corrects your name.
Unlike Microsoft Word, you can't add your name to the dictionary. Having to go back two or three times to fix your name after being auto corrected is just a hassle.
8. Having your name misspelled on important documents.
Important documents are the last thing you want your name misspelled on. Especially checks, awards, debit/credit cards. A lot of places will charge you again to have your name corrected. Like you messed it up in the first place, why do I have to pay for your mistake?
9. Having to repeat your name 6 or 7 times to people who can't wrap their head around your name.
My name is ______. "What did you say your was?" "How do you say it?" "Can you say that again?"
10. Having to explain where your name came from.
Make sure you know the history and origin of your name. A lot of people will ask.
11. Trying to google your name and having no meaning or anything on it.
"No results for this search"
12. Having to remember all the nicknames your friends and family have given you over the years.
"Hey honey booboo" "Smelly" "Cat" "Pumpkin" "Domino"
13. On the bright side, finding a username that isn't taken, isn't a problem.
Best feeling in the world is getting a username on the first try.
