When you think of a small town, there's no better example than Murray County, GA.

Murray County is a small town in the North Georgia mountains that not many people have heard of. When you're out of town and someone says "Where are you from?" You have to answer with:

"Chatsworth Georgia...well, its like 30 minutes from Dalton Georgia..yes the carpet capital...about an hour from Chattanooga..about 2 from Atlanta..."

It's never the simple "Chatsworth" answer that would save you about 15 minutes of your life. Though we all know this town is small, and we may complain, that's part of the beauty of our town, and here are 13 things all people from Murray County can relate too on a personal level:

1. Murray VS North Murray.

Small town rivalry at it's finest. When it comes to any sport there's bound to be a little bit of disagreement with who you root for. It was all fine when there was just Murray County High, but many (MANY MANY MANY) years later North Murray was created to help better our schools. Though we have this rivalry, and it's undeniable, we do stick up for our county school no matter what. If you're a NMHS alumni like myself and you hear someone from another town say "Murray County High School sucks." Or hear something bad about the football team, your natural reaction is "Uh, not really. They're kind of rocking it right now." And then to continue with the current stats of the school.

2. Mexican food is life.

We have at least five Mexican restaurants in our small town. Five. And I'm not complaining. Small town Mexican joints are the best, and no one can tell you differently. Los Amigos, El Pueblito, Sierra's, La Estrella...they are all en feugo.

3. Summer means shaved ice at Tempting Tiki.

Another small town favorite. The best shaved ice you could ever find is in a small shop on the corner in Eton across from Mapco. It's delicious. Nothing beats the North Georgia heat like a large Tiger's blood!

4. The roundabout.

Need I say more?

5. Going to town and seeing at least 2 people you know or graduated with.

It's impossible to not happen.

6. People cannot drive.

We live in a small town where people want to go slow, it's bound to be a problem.

7. You've seen a horse on the road and/or in a drive-thru line.

This really happens.

8. Our small town businesses are THE BEST.

Like Tempting Tiki we have a TON of small town businesses. Absolutely nothing compares to them! From the Vanity Salon, the Crave (omg yum), Pizza King, Pauls Drive-In, and Smokey Bones, nothing beats the services in our town.

9. Bringing in Paul's Drive-In for breakfast in high school made you the coolest.

If I had a dollar for every time someone did this in high school I could have a ton of Paul's chicken biscuits. 😊

10. The Chief Vann House

In 1805, Cherokee Chief James Vann opened his new brick mansion. Today, it's a historic and educational landmark.

11. Big High School Football

Just like Texas, we small town Georgia folk know how to take our small town high school football way too seriously as well.

12. Ingles

You worked here or know someone that does/did.

13. Southern hospitality.

Murray County is full of love. Though there are bitter people, just like everywhere you go, the feel of our beautiful mountain surrounded town can't be described better than as Southern hospitality. No matter where you go, there's always someone who will wave hello, always someone to help if you need it, and always someone to stop and say hello.

Our town may have its quirks, but that's what makes our town, ours.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
