13 Things People From Long Island Want You To Know

Going to school out of state can be tough, especially for Long Islanders. Whether you are going to school in a different part of New York State or across the country in California, here are 13 things people from Long Island would like you to know.

1. No one from Long Island actually pronounces it "Lawn-Guy-Land"

...and we've probably heard that joke at least 100 times so we might not be able to restrain ourselves from rolling our eyes if you say it.

2. We do not all worship Vineyard Vines

Yes, we may wear the brand religiously, but that is only because it is so versatile. Their long sleeve shirts are perfect for lazy days at the library and their button-ups are professional enough for presentations. Plus, their hats hide our unwashed post-Thirsty Thursday hair in class and they are cute (who doesn't love whales?).

3. We do not all play lacrosse

Even though lacrosse is a big sport on Long Island, the teams are actually pretty small.

4. We are not all rich

Just because we live on Long Island does not mean we are all Hamptonites. Nassau and Suffolk are two of the most expensive counties in the nation, so most of our money goes toward taxes.

5. We do not all have a house in the Hamptons

Again, not all of us can be the Kardashians.

6. We cannot pop into New York City whenever we want

Contrary to popular belief, Long Island is actually really big. It would take about four hours to get from New York City all the way to the east end. Anyone who lives towards the east end has at least a two-hour train ride to the city.

7. Most of us went to public schools, not private

8. Going to a deli on Long Island is a religious experience

A deli on Long Island is so much more than just the cold cuts section you see at Walmart. If you have not had The Gasm from Se-port deli, then you have not lived.

9. We really do have the best bagels.

The rest of the bagels in New York pale in comparison.

10. We really do have the best pizza.

Again, there is no competition.

11. Most of us live on the beach, but it is not a big deal.

If you live on the north or south shore of Long Island, you probably live on a private beach. No one actually uses these beaches except for high school students throwing parties.

12. We do not all know the Long Island medium.

Or talk like her, for that matter.

13. You live on Long Island, not in Long Island

There are only certain situations where you would say in Long Island, and yes, it does matter.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
