13 Things You Miss About AIM

AOL instant messaging used to be the hippest thing since sliced bread. Although technology has updated itself since, there are some silly things we can all admit to missing (a little bit).

13 Things You Miss About AIM

1. Going on Xanga and creating the coolest and HIPEST profile.

2. Chatting for hours with AIM robots, primarily, SmarterChild.

3. Waiting tirelessly for your crush to come online.

4. Having 3 different screen names for yourself, all of which involved some ridiculous hobby or trait, that you thought made you cool (I.E., swimluvr25).

5. Creating a totally cool (and mysterious) away message for yourself.

6. Using :) and <3 excessively, because this was the pre-emoji era.

7. Putting your significant other's name (could be as little as a crush) in your profile to let everyone know who you liked.

8. Creating an obnoxious font and color combo to type in, that actually hurt your eyes.

9. When AIM updated and you could finally be in a chat room with ALL of your friends.

10. Promising those same friends that you will most definitely “meet them on AIM later" to discuss the day's gossip.

11. Using your AIM email for everything and feeling super official.

12. Having a traumatic breakup, over AIM of course.

13. Talking in the coolest lingo, because why type out the whole phrase when you could just say “BRB".

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
