College has taught me more than just chemistry and writing skills. Seven weeks into my first college semester, I have embraced the unexpected teachings of college with ease. These 11 things were the most pleasant surprises.
1. Make friends with your CA!
Don't do it because you think you won't get in trouble when you get caught drinking; do it because she'll be the coolest person you know.
2. You still have friends when you're busy.
It's college. We're all busy, but that doesn't mean that your friends don't love you. You and your friends don't have to see each other every day to still be friends.
3. Call your mom daily.
Don't text, call. Your mom's voice will soothe your woes, I promise.
4. Participate in everything possible.
Yes, college events are during prime sleep time, but stay up and go! It's important to make new friends you can connect with. You'll regret it if you don't.
5. Mental Health breaks are important, so take them!
I know you have a million things to do, we all do, but please take care of yourself. School is important, but your health should always come first.
6. Push yourself...
Don't settle for good enough.
7. ...but don't spread yourself too thin.
Know when enough is enough. Nobody expects you to do everything, and you shouldn't.
8. It's okay to binge watch Netflix for a week straight.
Netflix binging is the safest form of binging. It also makes you new friends because everyone does this, and thus everyone can relate. Plus, relaxation is good in a world full of stress.
9. Don't lose touch with your people from back home.
Yes, a lot of high school friendships die after graduation, but not all of them have to. Make an effort to talk to those who you care about on a regular schedule, even if you don't get to see them often.
10. The best things to do in college are those you never would have done in high school.
I never thought I'd join a sorority, but here I am, having the time of my life. College is a time to break out and find what you really love without the judgement of the people you've known from kindergarten. It's the perfect time to do something unexpected.
11. Be proud of yourself, no matter what.
Yes, other people's praise is nice-- but you don't need it. Your own self-praise should be your motivation. Things will always go wrong, but make lemonade, sweetie.
12. Keep an open mind and a closed mouth when you disagree with something.
Listen to people's thoughts and opinions. Take them into consideration. Make sure you actually hear what people are saying when you're listening.
13. Embrace everything life throws at you with pride.
Make lemonade, sweetie. You'll get through it, I promise. Things will get better. They always do.
