If you’re an avid hiker like myself, you want to make sure you have everything you need before you leave for your trip. There’s no feeling like being halfway up a mountain and realizing you’ve forgotten something you need. It’s always good to make a list just to be safe. So, grab your backpack and get to packin’.
1. Thick, but well ventilated socks.
You don't want your feet to sweat, because that's pretty disgusting, but you also don't want blisters. My recommendation would be these socks from REI. Thick enough to protect your feet, and they wick away your sweat.
2. Homemade trail mix
Yeah, you can always buy it at the store…but why do that when you can make your own for cheaper? Plus, you can make the recipe your own. Here are some good ones to start with.
3. WA-TER, and lots of it.
You'd rather have too much than not enough. Your best bet is to get a large bag like this one and slip it in your backpack, and then have a large water bottle. Which also reminds me, getting a splash guard for your bottle will change. your. life.
4. Sunscreen & bug repellent
There's also bug repellent that contains SPF. SCORE.
5. First-aid kit
Self-explanatory.
6. Hand-sanitizer
Also self-explanatory.
7. Bandana
You have no idea how versatile a bandana can be. You can use it for ev-er-y-thing.
8. Camera
You don’t want to get to the end of your hike, see that gorgeous view, and realize you don’t have a camera to capture the moment.
9. Rain jacket
Summer showers can be great, but it’s less than enjoyable to be hot and soaked on the side of a mountain.
10. Watch/ GPS/ map/ compass
Thankfully, we live in a world where all of these things are literally at your fingertips. Use them.
11. Hammock
Kicking off your boots and taking a nice nap, or laying down with a good book, is a really rewarding way to relax after making it to the end of your trail.
12. A good book
Now's a great time to crack open that book you've been desperately wanting to read but just haven't had the chance.
