Ah, the Sherlock holiday special. It's the first episode that viewers have seen since early 2014, and we've known for months that it was coming on New Year's day. Set back in the original Holmes' Victorian era, 99 percent of the episode was a multi-layered "Inception" style dream within a dream. In fact, the little bit of the episode that did occur in reality only advanced the plot a minute or two forward in time from where the series three finale left off. This left the writers with the perfect opportunity to drop an episode so laced with strange, hilarious insider-jokes and moments that will make you wonder if you really watched that, or if the whole thing was a bizarre cocaine-laced fever dream.
1. When the sweet and bubbly Molly Hooper was a moustached man filled with seething rage.
2. When Holmes learned how to use Wingardium Leviosa.
3. When a police officer and government high-up decide to go grave robbing in the middle of the night.
4. When Watson thought he was in "The Parent Trap."
5. When Moriarty exhibited Grade-A gun safety habits
6. When Watson was the worst husband in the history of humankind.
7. When Watson tried to give Holmes the talk.
8. When Mycroft put on a few pounds over the holidays.
9. When Mycroft and Mary teamed up to become Holmes and Watson 2.0.
10. When Moriarty was a blushing bride.
11. Actually, pretty much anything Moriarty did.
12. When Holmes calls it like he sees it.
13. When you thought it was all fun and games, but then they hit you with this heartbreaking flashback.
Happy hiatus, Sherlock fans! Series four begins filming in April 2016.
