Thanksgiving, while having problematic origins, is now a time where we gather together with our extended relatives for a slightly awkward dinner and allow ourselves to eat until we're almost painfully full. But the buildup to this marvelous feast only makes the pumpkin pie taste that much better.
1. The week before Thanksgiving Break when you can't wait for all the food but you still have so much to do.
2. Then it's Friday, you've turned in your last paper and finally get to go home.
3. After driving for hours, you get home and immediately, lie in your bed.
Your bed. With the thick, comfy mattress and and the nest of blankets.
4. After a nap, you get up and chat with your mom for a bit before napping again.
5. You've thought about unpacking, but decide you can probably live out of your duffel bag for a week.
My room won't look like a war-zone by Sunday, right?
6. And until it's time to eat, you don't plan on moving from the couch.
Unless, it's to your bed or the fridge.
7. But you go to the grocery store with your parents, because you might feel bad if you spent no time with them and all your time with Netflix.
Anyway, you have to keep your status as "family favorite."
8. You turn on the music and offer to help cook, partially so you can eat the extras.
35 percent helping, 65 percent snacking.
9. At dinner you're being nice to all of your extended relatives, but you can't help glaring at that one person who keeps being the worst.
Drunk uncle, racist grandparent, crazy-conservative aunt, etc.
10. After the ordeal called "dinner" you put all the dishes in the sink, thinking you'll have more energy to do them tomorrow, then drag your mashed-potato-filled self to bed.
You're too full and happy to think clearly. Those dishes will take hours.
11. Somehow it's already the end of break, you've eaten all the leftovers, and it's time to leave but you haven't finished packing.
12. On the way back, you already miss your dog, your family, and the delicious free food.
Only three more weeks until winter break...
13. But although you love your family and had a smashing break, you're ecstatic to see your roommate as soon as you return.
Because your roommate is one of the best people you know.
