13 Signs You Went To Seckman High School

Oh man, where do I even start. High schools change who you are as a person. The people around you were the people who you grew up with. These were people who knew you before you even knew how to drive a car. The people around you basically made you who you are, even if they only changed you a little. Seckman was a very unique school. Although it would be considered a country school, it still had a city feel to it. We had big graduating classes that felt small because everyone knew everyone. If you graduated from Seckman, here are some things you might relate to.

1. You are more interested in sports that don't matter than sports that do.

Most high schools prefer watching the "popular" sports like football and basketball. Although there were always a lot of people at football and basketball games, that wasn't where the hype was. Why? Because we got our butts kicked in football and basketball. Many students loved going to support softball, baseball, soccer, and yes, you guessed it, wrestling. We were good at the sports no one cared about.

2. The Blue Crew will always hold a place in your heart.

Well, the blue crew was arguably the best fan crowd in Jefferson County. They were a group of people who went to games with their bodies painted completely in blue and gold. They tried to make it to everything and supported everyone, literally. They had outrageous chants and constantly would try to get into the other team's head.

3. Nothing made the principals more mad than the senior sit down.

It is no secret that Seckman's hallways could get a little crowded. With around 400 people in each graduating class, there wasn't really a lot of room for people to move. Senior sit down was started by the class of 2012 and has become a tradition ever since. It is where on the last week of school, at a random time, all the seniors sit down in the middle of the hallway and clog it up. It was a pretty harmless senior prank, but it infuriated the principals. In 2012, they laughed it off and told people not to do it. By 2014, they started yelling at us over the speakers to get up and leave. By 2016, they were told if they even bend down to tie their shoe they will get suspended and not walk at graduation. I guess the fun can only last for so long.

4. Everyone wanted Mr. Metteer as a teacher.

Mr. Metteer was an English teacher who mainly taught juniors and seniors. What made him so amazing was that he was incredibly nice and always went out of his way to help a student in need. Plus, he would tie in fun games and discussions into his class periods so that it would literally make students want to attend his class.

5. Tailgating before school was considered a normal thing.

There was always that group of people who came to school two hours early, backed their trucks into their parking spots, and tailgated before school started. It only took so long for someone to complain about them, so what did they do? They went to another parking lot.

6. The Wingos might be the most athletic family in the world.

This family is good at everything. Brock? Three-time state champion wrestler and also a division one wrestler. Kennedy? Division 1 cheerleader who made assembly performances worth watching. Reese? Great at soccer and will most likely be amazing just like her brother and sister. Eli? Probably good at everything.

7. You do not own red.

Fox was red, so why would you wear it? You may have had every t-shirt color in the book, but there is no chance you would ever wear a red t-shirt, ever.

8. You do not know how to drive in the snow.

Seckman is right in the middle of all the crazy back roads in Jefferson County. Therefore, in order to get to school, people have to drive on those crazy back roads. You probably stayed up late at night tweeting #CallItOffDianne hoping that your superintendent would see these tweets and call off school.

9. Your (ex) superintendent is famous.

It's not for the hashtag #CallItOffDianne either..

10. You were scared to eat your lunch.

The only good days were spicy chicken day and nacho grande day. If it was anything else, you better watch out, because you probably weren't sure if it was food or a live animal. Want to see more of the horrible food? Search #StopSeckmanLunches on twitter.

11. The most interesting day in the world was when the turf got spray painted.

This was all that was talked about. No one could even believe that someone would come to Seckman and spray paint graphic images onto our brand new turf. Teachers could barely have class because it was the biggest mystery the school probably ever had.

12. You hated teachers that wouldn't let you watch the Cardinals game in October.

This is a pretty normal one for St. Louis, but if the Cardinals were in the playoffs while you were in school, you were watching, or at least listening to the game. If a teacher wouldn't let you, they were the worst person on the planet. Everyone knows that the Cardinals are way more important than going to school, right?

13. Cheap Seats Photography were the best people in Jefferson County.

They loved coming to every one of your games, and always cheered you on against non-Jeffco teams. Oh, and they took the most amazing picture in the world.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
