13 Shows With Strong Female Leads to Binge On Netflix

At the end of the day, Netflix is always there for you. If you're like me, you love to see women kicking butt and getting what they deserve. The following 13 television shows not only showcase this, but also use these strong female characters to uplift women around the world.

1. Once Upon a Time

This fairytale drama is in the midst of its sixth season, but it's never too late. Following the daughter of Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas), the show transcends time, realms, life, and death.

2. Supergirl

Being the older cousin of Superman, Kara Zor-El (Glee's Melissa Benoist), also known as Kara Danvers, must protect National City from enemies both foreign and domestic. Full of love and loss, the show is certainly not devoid of emotion.

3. Scandal

Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) is essentially a household name at this point. If you haven't seen this scandalous political drama, hop over to Netflix ASAP.

4. Grey's Anatomy

Another Shonda Rhimes show like Scandal, Meredith Grey's (Ellen Pompeo) story will keep you on the edge of your seat as this hospital drama unfolds in typical unexpected Shonda Rhimes fashion.

5. The Crown

One of Netflix's newest original series, this show follows Queen Elizabeth's ascension to the throne in the early twentieth century.

6. Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones was released on Netflix as part of a multi-series tie-in and we're so glad it did. The titular character, portrayed by Krysten Ritter, kicks major butt, and we're looking forward to her impending role in The Defenders.

7. iZombie

iZombie kicks typical campy zombie stories to the curb and brings a fresh new appeal to the genre. Rose McIver's acting has also allowed the show to flourish as much as it has.

8. The 100

Like how iZombie handles zombies, The 100 handles dystopian Earth in a clever way that makes it less stereotypical and more accessible to the viewers. In a nutshell, the apocalypse occurred and the sole survivors are living on a giant arc in space. However, as resources dwindle, 100 teenagers are sent to the ground to see if Earth is once again livable. Strong women such as Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor) and Octavia Blake (Marie Avgerapoulos) begin to take charge once they land, and the mythos of the show begins to unfurl in truly beautiful ways.

9. American Horror Story

While this show may seem more like an ensemble than the others, there's no doubt that actresses such as Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Kathy Bates, and Lady Gaga have carried the series.

10. Quantico

Quantico, first premiering in 2015, came at a critical time, as the show addresses terrorism. Alex Parrish, brilliantly played by Priyanka Chopra, is originally blamed as the terrorist on the show, but with good writing comes good twists in the very fabric of the show. Quantico is able to delicately handle the subject matter while also bringing a sense of urgent reality to the subject that a lot of people needed to see.

11. Orange is the New Black

Everyone has heard of Orange is the New Black by now, and for good reason. This Netflix original series boasts a large cast of strong women and manages to portray the struggles that women face both in and out of the US prison system.

12. Charmed

I can't be the only one that was raised on this show. Right? Whether you're starting it for the first time or reminiscing on old episodes, the Halliwell sisters will always be there to spice up your life.

13. Pretty Little Liars

Last but certainly not least, this series is winding to a close in the spring, so be sure to catch up on the mystery and suspense before the final 10 episodes resume in March.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
