13 Reasons Why My Mom Is My Best Friend
Elite Daily

If you told me in high school that I would be writing an article about why my mom is my best friend, I wouldn’t believe you.

When you think of the word "best friend", what do you think of? I personally think of someone who you can trust and rely on. Now that I have finished my sophomore year at college, I have come to the realization that my mom is my best friend. My mom is constantly there for me, caring for me and, of course, giving me a shoulder to lean on.

Here are 13 reasons why my mom is my best friend and why you should consider your mom to be your best friend too:

1. She wants what is best for you

Even if you have had a bad day, made a bad decision or even failed an exam, your mom will always root for you! Every mom wants what is best for their child. When you make a mistake, your mom will look past it and find ways to make it better, which brings my to my next point.

2. She always gives the best advice

Whether we like to listen to our moms or not, they are usually right. One thing that moms have that kids do not is experience. They have experienced everything and have seen it all. When giving advice, she looks all the different perspectives that maybe you haven’t thought about. They can be the best when giving relationship advice, friendship advice and even job advice.

3. She will always be brutally honest

Let’s be honest, we have all had our mom tell us, “That shirt is not flattering on you” or “You are not going out of the house dressed like that.” Whether it's what you wanted to hear or not, you can always count on your mom to be honest. She always has your best interests at heart and always wants you to be happy.

4. She knows you better than you know yourself

Your mom knows more about you than you know about yourself. Although that may be a scary thought, it's true. Moms know exactly what we are thinking and can anticipate our next moves.

5. She always know how to cheer you up

I don’t know about you, but my mom can always brighten my day and “turn my frown upside down.” Moms have a special instinct that comes in handy when their children aren’t in the best mood. They will stop what they are doing just to see you crack a smile and make your day a little bit better.

6. She makes you feel safe

Being around my mom makes me feel as though nothing will hurt me. She gives the best hugs and protects us from harm. Talking to her makes you feel nothing but calm.

7. She will always answer your late night calls

I know that there are plenty of times that I’ve called my mom at night to either vent or de-stress. Sometimes the only person that you want to talk to is your mom. Especially being away from home, a call home to hear your mom's voice is the remedy to a bad day. You can always count on talking to your mom when you are going through an emotional/mental breakdown. She will always try to fix your problems. Moms are like detectives. She’ll figure out what’s wrong even though you told her that “it’s nothing” or “I’m fine.” Even if we take it out on her, she’ll still listen and hear us out.

8. She knows how to get on your nerves

True friends can get under your skin every-so-often. Although we all dream of a perfect friendship, it just doesn’t exist. Getting on each others' nerves from time-to-time is perfectly healthy.

9. She believes in you even if you don’t

Come on, we’ve all been there — we have thought to ourselves, “I can’t do it.” Although we think that we may not be able to do something, our moms believe that we can.

10. She shaped you into the person that you are today

Without my mom, I don’t know where I would be today. She was there every step of the way and is a constant role model for me. She has seen everything, starting from my worst times to my most embarrassing times to my best times. She has truly experienced it all with me.

11. She’ll always try to "get it", even when she doesn’t

You can’t blame your mom for being older and out-of-date. She tries her best to understand everything even when she doesn’t. She’ll try to keep up with modern day terms and technology, and tries to understand all of the stupid dramas in your life.

12. She is your biggest supporter and encourages you to do your best

Nothing makes a mother prouder than seeing you do your best and thrive at something. She is always supporting you through your life and you can always count on her to lift you up.

13. She'll always love you unconditionally

Through thick and thin, the good and bad, the pretty and the ugly, your mom is truly your best friend whether you believe it or not. She is your biggest fan and loves you no matter what. She will always have your back and will go out of her way just to make you happy. Friends come and go in life, but your mom will always hold a special place in her heart for you. Thank you mom for being my best friend and thanks for everything that you do for me!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
